Assignment
How well does the draft line up with the assignment as stated on the assignment sheet?

Introduction
Does the introduction provide all the basic information about the text such as author, title of the work? Is there a brief
summary or overview of the story or poem being discussed?

Thesis
How well does the thesis statement describe the theme/ message or the student’s particular interpretation of the work?
Does the thesis say something interesting and arguable about the work?

Structure
Is the arrangement of the ideas clear to you? Are the body paragraphs logical and organized to you?

Does each body paragraph begin with a topic sentence that ties back to the main point expressed in the thesis?

Is all the material in the body paragraph relevant to the point made in topic sentence? Does the paragraph adequately
discuss and support the point--meaning are you convinced by the evidence? Or is more support needed?

Documentation
How consistently does borrowed material illuminate and support (not lead and dominate) the student’s own ideas about
the work? How well is the importance of ideas reflected in the emphasis they receive?

Has the writer used correct in-text citation format to document borrowed material? Is there a Works Cited page?

Analysis/Evidence
Does essay synthesize the evidence to reveal insightful patterns, differences, similarities? Point out particularly strong
areas of analysis. Point out weak areas.

Does information from sources provide enough interpretation to develop a comprehensive analysis or synthesis,
thoroughly analyzing assumptions?

Where might supporting evidence seem weak or irrelevant to readers?

Grammar/Mechanics
Underline any spelling, grammar, typos or unclearly worded ideas. Are there many distracting errors.
