Installation of window 7 in Virtual Machine

Prerequisites

1. Download Windows 7 ISO: Obtain a copy of the Windows 7 installation ISO file.
You can usually download it from Microsoft if you have a valid license, or use an
installation disc if available.
2. Install VirtualBox: Ensure VirtualBox is installed on your host operating system
(Windows, macOS, Linux). If not installed, download and install VirtualBox from
https://www.virtualbox.org/.

Steps to Install Windows 7 in VirtualBox

Step 1: Create a New Virtual Machine

1. Launch VirtualBox: Open VirtualBox from your desktop or Start menu.


2. Create a New Virtual Machine:
o Click on "New" to start the VM creation wizard.
3. Name and Operating System:
o Enter a name for your virtual machine (e.g., "Windows 7").
o Choose "Microsoft Windows" as the type.
o Select "Windows 7 (64-bit)" or "Windows 7 (32-bit)" depending on your ISO
file.
o Click "Next".
4. Memory Size:
o Allocate RAM to your virtual machine. Use the recommended size or adjust as
needed based on your system's resources.
o Click "Next".
5. Hard Disk:
o Choose "Create a virtual hard disk now" and click "Create".
o Select "VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)" as the hard disk file type.
o Click "Next".
6. Storage on Physical Hard Disk:
o Choose between "Dynamically allocated" (recommended, as it grows as
needed) or "Fixed size" (pre-allocated, takes up space immediately).
o Click "Next".
7. File Location and Size:
o Specify the location and size of the virtual hard disk file.
o Adjust the size if necessary (recommended minimum is 25 GB for Windows
7).
o Click "Create".

Step 2: Install Windows 7

1. Start the Virtual Machine:


o Select your newly created virtual machine from the VirtualBox Manager.
o Click "Start".
2. Install Windows 7 from ISO:
o VirtualBox will prompt you to select a startup disk.
o Click the folder icon and browse to select the Windows 7 ISO file you
downloaded.
o Click "Start".
3. Follow the Windows 7 Installation Wizard:
o Windows 7 installation will begin inside the virtual machine.
o Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 7:
 Choose your language, time and currency format, and keyboard or
input method.
 Click "Install Now" and proceed through the installation process.
4. Complete Installation:
o After installation completes, VirtualBox may prompt you to restart the virtual
machine.
o Log in to your newly installed Windows 7.

Step 3: Install VirtualBox Guest Additions (Optional but Recommended)

1. Insert Guest Additions CD Image:


o While the virtual machine is running, go to VirtualBox menu: Devices ->
Insert Guest Additions CD Image....
2. Install Guest Additions:
o Inside the virtual machine, open File Explorer and navigate to "This PC".
o Double-click on the CD drive containing VirtualBox Guest Additions.
o Run the installer and follow the prompts to install Guest Additions.
o Restart the virtual machine after installation.

Steps to Install Windows 7 in VMware Workstation Player

Step 1: Create a New Virtual Machine

1. Launch VMware Workstation Player: Open VMware Workstation Player from


your desktop or Start menu.
2. Create a New Virtual Machine:
o Click on "Create a New Virtual Machine" or go to File -> New Virtual
Machine.
3. New Virtual Machine Wizard:
o Select "Typical" for the setup type and click "Next".
4. Select Installation Method:
o Choose "Installer disc image file (iso)" and click "Browse" to locate and select
your Windows 7 ISO file.
o Click "Next".
5. Enter Windows Product Key:
o Enter your Windows 7 product key if prompted, and click "Next".
6. Name and Location:
o Specify a name and location for your virtual machine files, or leave the default
settings.
o Click "Next".
7. Specify Disk Capacity:
o Set the disk size for your virtual machine. VMware typically suggests a size;
adjust as needed.
o Select "Store virtual disk as a single file" for simplicity.
o Click "Next".
8. Ready to Create Virtual Machine:
o Review the summary of your virtual machine configuration.
o Click "Finish" to create the VM.

Step 2: Customize VM Settings (Optional)

1. Edit Virtual Machine Settings:


o Select your newly created virtual machine from the VMware Workstation
Player library.
o Click on "Edit virtual machine settings" to customize:
 Memory: Adjust RAM allocation as needed.
 Processors: Modify CPU cores and execution settings.
 Network Adapter: Choose network settings (e.g., NAT, Bridged).
 Other Hardware: Configure display, USB, and other hardware
settings.
o Click "OK" to save changes.

Step 3: Install Windows 7

1. Power On the Virtual Machine:


o Double-click on your virtual machine to start it.
2. Install Windows 7:
o The virtual machine will boot from the Windows 7 ISO.
o Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 7 as you would on a
physical computer.
o Choose your language, time and currency format, and keyboard or input
method.
o Select "Install Now" and proceed through the installation process.
3. Complete Installation:
o After installation completes, VMware Tools may automatically install to
enhance VM performance and functionality.
o Restart the virtual machine if prompted and log in to your newly installed
Windows 7.
