COURSE PLAN

INTRODUCTION –
Course planning refers to planning course of instructions. In curriculum planning, there were key
to successful teaching and good planning. It severs as a guideline for the teacher as well as for
the students in creating the atmosphere conductive for worthwhile learning and purposeful
activities. Course planning is the developing of an educational plan for a specific course of study
comprising of several short subject courses and each courses with many interrelated units leading
to an award of a diploma or a degree after its successful completion.

DEFINITION -
 “It is defined as a process of planning the entire content of the program which has to be
done before the commencement of course.”

 A course plan may be defined as a complete series of studies leading to graduation or a

degree as in the case of BSc nursing course requiring completion of several short courses.
(BT Basavanthapa).

 “It is a planning ahead of the system which requires continuous refining.”

PURPOSE –
 To ensure autonomy.
 It gives stability.
 It helps to solves the problem
 It supports the curriculum process.
 It secures future progress
 It brings about improvements.
 It promotes utilization of resources.
PRINCIPLES –
 The state the objective in behavioral terms which has to be achieved.
 Establish sequence.
 Organize the content focusing on the students rather than subject matter.
 It should allow for individual differences & according to the level of the students.
 There should be a logic in organizing units and also should allow for problem solving.
 Promote cumulative learning.
 Integration.
 Avoid repetition.
 The course should provide variety in modes of learning.

LEVELS OF COURSE PLANNING –

Course planning is done at different levels-

 University level
 Institutions level
 Instructional level.

THE TEACHER SHOULD BE KEPT IN MIND

 What should be learn from the course?
 What should be the sequence of topics/units?
 How much time is to be allotted?
 Provide cumulative learning by reinforcement.
 Plan for integration (plan related courses horizontally)
 Unity curriculum.
 Select an approach that is acceptable to all teachers.
 Provide variety in modes of learning. Eg: group discussion. Independent study models

STRUCTURE OF COURSE PLAN

In planning course - two kinds of planning are involved:
 Identifying the kinds of elements and which specific learning are to be recognized
(knowledge and understanding).
 The selection of specific organizing centers on which as much as possible of the learners
entire being to be focused. (Specific content and teaching and learning activities to be
involved in the learner’s inquiry.)

ELEMENTS OF COURSE PLAN:

 Course description
 Behavioral objective
 Placement of the course by specifying the level of learners.
 Explain the time allotted. If clinical experience is needed, specify the time meant for
theory and practical experience.
 Organize the content into unit wise of lesson plan wise.
 Details of the resource materials and teaching-learning methods to be followed.
 Details of learning activities for students.
 Details of formative and summative evaluation, ratio between internal assessment and
university examination. Etc.
 Reference for teachers and students.

CONTENT OF COURSE PLAN

 Mention the objectives or outcome too be achieved through the given course.

 Specify the level of learners.

 Brief course description.

 Mention the placement or the course within the curriculum.

 Organize the organization content topic wise, unit wise. Or lesson pan wise.

 Describe the resource materials and method of teaching.

 Give the plan of learning activities for students. (eg: assignment)

 Describe the procedure for ongoing and terminal evaluation.

 Give reference for teachers as well as for students.

 Mention place, length of experience record. Observation, and procedures, supervised and

guided practice.

PROCESS OF ORGANIZING LEARNING EXPERIENCE

 The staff concerned for teaching the course must discuss and agree on the general scheme
of organization of the course for its smooth implementation.
 Agreement should be made regarding the general principal of organization.eg.
Continuity, sequence and integration.
 The basic unit should be included.
 Flexible plan should be developed which can be handled by each teacher.
 The plan should be used for particular activities for a particular course.

TEACHERS ROLE IN COURSE PLANNING

 The extent, to which a teacher will plan course individually, will vary from institution to
institution.
 The general objectives, general area of subject matter and evaluation measures for each
course will be determined at the institutional or faculty or instructional level of ensure
continuity and progression in learning, to avoid gaps and non-productive repetition in
subject- matter content and to provide the reinforcement of previous learning.

These all will depend on:

 Teachers own self – appraisal.
 Attitude towards their students teaching and learning.
 Knowledge and skills related to the area of teaching.
 Composition of learners group.
 Teacher’s insight and skill sound ideas and understanding known conditions.

CONCLUSIONS
In conclusion, teachers need to be ready to modify at any given time, as no two classes, or
students for that matter, are going to learn alike. I believe that having a few back up plans are
always going to be in a teacher’s best interest for the success of their students and really for
themselves as a teacher as well.
