Planning Notes
 Review the slides and the exercises in the lesson.
 This unit will challenge a lot of fundamental assumptions students will have about what
the internet is, and how it works. It may be useful to explore these assumptions at the
start of the class to get everyone on the same page.
 Note: This lesson deals with the censorship of internet content. Please be aware that some
students may come from a country that has experienced this censorship or propaganda.
Discuss beforehand if they would like to share their experience or if they feel
uncomfortable with the material. The main ideas can still be reached by only discussing
censorship in the US.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Peer Code Review Template To strengthen student collaboration and code
analysis skills, use this for guided peer code review with any exercise.
Lesson Opener:
 Have students brainstorm and write down answers to the discussion questions listed
below. Students can work individually or in groups/pairs. Have them share their
responses. [5 mins]
Activities:
 Watch the lesson video and complete the corresponding quiz. [12-15 mins]
 Complete The Internet and You reflection. [5 mins]
 Complete the Censorship Opener handout. [5 mins]
 Complete the Is Censorship Ever Appropriate? handout. As an alternative, students can
actually visit the two sites pictured on the website by going to the following links:
Google.com Search and Google.cn Search. Encourage them to explore the two sites and
compare different search queries. [20-25 mins]
Lesson Closer:
 Have students reflect and discuss their responses to the end of class discussion questions.

Discussion Questions
Class Discussion Notes Template For additional insights into student
thinking, have students capture their personal responses to lesson discussion questions and
reflections.
Beginning of class:
 Explain what the Internet is in your own words. How does it work?

 Answers will vary.

 List several activities that you depend on the internet to accomplish.

 Sending emails, looking up information, etc.

End of class:
 Imagine that the entire internet goes down for one week. What do you think would
happen? What would we have to do differently?

 Answers will vary. Challenge students to think about all of the automated
processes that would be disrupted as a result of the internet going down!
 Why is it important that all internet connected devices use the same protocols?

 Protocols are important because they allow different devices to communicate

with each other.

Modification: Advanced
 Have students research a future technological innovation that could change the way
things are currently done.

Modification: Students Needing Additional

Support
 Print out video slides for students to reference

Modification: English Language Learners

 Print out video slides and have students use a dictionary to translate unknown vocabulary
