Quartz memory gauges have superior pressure data

quality and range. For downhole temperatures above 135
°C we prefer the stability and reliability of quartz data.
The pressure data resolution from a quartz sensor is 50
times greater than a piezoresistive solution (0.00006%
quartz vs 0.0003% piezo full-scale resolution).
Quartz pressure gauges are excellent for long term high-
temperature operations where derivative calculations
are critical. A quartz tools response will remain stable
up to 200 °C. If it wasn’t for the cost of quartz and their
dampened response, they would be the preferred choice
for every solution.

The shortest slimhole 0.75” diameter gauge available. Quartz Gauge uses a AA battery
as its power source. Limited space is available for gauge carrier, coiled tubing, and DST
operations and the AA battery is the smallest form factor available for powering a
quartz tool. Hence, a 0.75" OD is currently the smallest diameter quartz memory tool.

The 1.25” Quartz DCQ II has the largest internal diameter barrel volume available,
which allows for a larger battery to energize the gauge for extra-long term tests. The
DCQ II Quartz Gauge was specifically designed for long term gauge hanger applications
in extreme environments. 120 days of downhole quartz pressure data in 160°C gas
wells. We have long term downhole experience with this tool in Saudi Arabia, the North
Sea, and the Eagleford Shale.

Benefits

Piezo memory gauges are economical. The piezoresistive

sensor can compete with quartz on accuracy and stability.
However, compromises in data resolution need to be made
(0.0003% piezo vs 0.00006% quartz full-scale resolution).
Piezo pressure gauges are excellent measurement
solutions in most downhole environments. However, we
prefer to limit their long-term use to temperatures below
140 °C. For short term applications, the sensor and tools
can survive at 177 °C.
Due to their small size, piezo gauges respond quickly to
transients and use less energy. The lower energy budget
allows operators to place piezo memory tools downhole
for extended durations.

The 0.75” Piezo pressure gauge is characterized by its o-ring sealed sensor; a very
simple and reliable design. This tool will survive multiple high shock loads downhole
including; jarring, setting locks, and perforation events. Monitoring packer seals and
shifting sleeves on multi-stage fracture monitoring jobs are common uses for this tool
design.

DataCan piezo gauge design is one of the smallest most compact designs in the
industry, which ultimately helps decrease the cost of the tool. DataCan piezo gauges

dummy valve, which allows the customer to deploy the memory gauge the same way

Application
This tool was designed for extremely harsh environments, both physically and
chemically. This downhole pressure gauge is often hung below the strainer on a rod lift
pump or below plugs during an offset fracture job. When running the tool below a rod
pump, the operator captures the reservoir and artificial lift performance data without
the cost slickline. When the pump dies, the tool is recovered for free and semi-
permanent data is evaluated post mortem.

DataCan’s Burst Tool is an ultra fast sampling memory

tool that capture’s a perforation event at a rate of 32,000
samples per second. As with all DataCan products, the
Burst Tool operates using the same simple and easy to
use program and download software.
This gauge has non-volatile memory so your data won’t
be lost when you disconnect the battery pack.
The Burst Tool will store up to 8 high-speed sampling
events with one high-speed event capturing 500,000
samples or ~15 seconds of data on the Fast speed

Application
The 1.25” Burst Memory Pressure Gauge has ultra-fast sampling capabilities. This
pressure gauge will capture a perforation event, at a rate of 32,000 samples per second.
There are 3 sampling speeds:

Basic Speed = As fast as 1 sample / second

Intermediate Speed = 10,000 samples / second
High Speed = User Selectable 32,000 or 16,000 samples / second

The gauge has non-volatile memory, so the data will not be lost when you disconnect
the battery pack. The Burst Tool can store up to 8 high speed sampling events. One
high speed event will capture 500,000 samples, or ~15 seconds of data at the high
speed. The Burst Tool can also store up to 1 million regular speed data samples. The
Burst Tool works at temperatures up to 150°C and pressures up to 30,000 psi.

Benefits
Highspeed event data is captured prior to, during, and after the perforation event.

A burst event capture can be initiated in three ways:

Normal = Change sample rates at pre-programmed time intervals
Absolute Pressure Trigger = Burst event capture starts at an absolute pressure setpoint
Delta Pressure Trigger = Burst event captured after a change in pressure over time

The sensor, electronics, sealing package, and battery have all been custom designed to
withstand the perforation explosion.

This smart cablehead measures pressure, external temperature, flow rate, and casing

Lee flow meters. The Mini Production Logging Tool has an RTD sensor for fast
temperature sensing. Both RTD and piezo pressure sensor are electron beam welded so
the tool is less likely to leak. The Mini Production Logging Tool has a Casing Collar

your coil tubing string and bottom-hole assembly. The Coil Force Gauge acts as a black
box recording device to assist engineers in understanding what is happening
downhole. The Coil Force Gauge measures up to 80,000 pounds of tension and 20,000
pounds of compression, 15,000 psi internal and external pressure, and 350°F.
Additionally, the tool is robust enough to withstand multiple 50G acceleration events.
The memory capacity allows for the tool to capture 8 days of data sampling 10 times

Application
The 1.75” Geothermal Pressure Temperature Flow Gauge with CCL and Gamma Ray
has an external fast response temperature sensor that is exposed to the wellbore fluid
and an internal pressure piezo sensor that senses wellbore pressure through a capillary
tube. The casing collar locator (CCL) uses high strength, long life magnets that provide
accurate depth correlation when run downhole. The Gamma Ray section of the tool
employs a sensitive sodium iodide scintillation crystal and photomultiplier tube to
detect naturally occurring and artificially induced gamma ray radiation. This is used for
correlation to the surrounding lithology of the well. The 1.75” Geothermal PTS-GR/CCL
tool is compatible with the 5” or 7” Fullbore Spinner as well as the 1.375”, 1.688” and
2.125” Continuous Spinner.

The temperature sensitive downhole electronics are thermally insulated inside a

Application
DataCan’s shut in tool allows the well-bore to be shut in downhole rather than at
surface. The process of shutting in a well downhole eliminates the “well bore storage
effects”. Well bore storage effects are the result of long lengths of production tubing
that need to be pressurized before the buildup can be recorded. DataCan’s 4.50” Valve
is 3.50” in diameter with a 4.90 square inch flow area and can be used in 4-1/2” or
larger tubing. DataCan’s patented instant close valve design has multiple cycle
capability and can operate at temperatures up to 150°C. The 4.50” Valve is very durable
and can withstand the most physical of downhole conditions.

Application
DataCan’s Universal Drive assembly is used to drive all sizes of DataCan shut in tools. A
high temperature drive assembly is available that can operate at temperatures up to
177°C and a high torque universal drive assembly (780:1 gear box) is also now available
and offered as our default drive assembly. The Universal Drive is programmed using
DataCan download software and is multi cycle programmable for applications where
the valve needs to open and close multiple times downhole. Locking 3 X “D” battery
packs are used in the drive assembly, which is enough power for the shut in tool to
open and close up to 8 times.

The Single Channel Piezo Logger is used to measure either tubing or annulus pressure depending on where it has been
installed on the wellhead. It can be used in a wide variety of applications, such as during injection monitoring or fraccing.
The Single Channel Piezo Logger is a classic product that is easy to use. A single button is used to turn the device on and off. A
lemo connection allows operators to program and download the logger using our standard DataCan gauge software. The
Single Channel Piezo Logger can come with an antenna, which will send data to a laptop via radio frequency.

Application
The Four-Channel Piezo is the second generation wellhead logger that gives users much more flexibility when designing a
surface testing suite. The Multi-Channel Piezo has all of the features of the Single Channel Piezo, but you can now add multiple
transmitters to one data logger. Up to 3 additional external devices can be connected to the device at a single time. The main
unit and each external pressure transmitter can be screwed onto the wellhead to measure readings such as: tubing, casing and
vent pressures. The logger contains an internal battery pack to power the unit. The user can also supply external power
through the SCADA / Modbus connector.

Application
The Piezo Pressure Transmitter uses an electron beam welded piezo sensor to measure pressure of the wellbore at surface.
The pressure transmitters have two connections. There is a 4-pin military connector for electrical connections at the top, and a

The downhole gauge bomb well carriers are used to house one or two DataCan
memory gauges inside of a shock and dampened protective housing. DataCan’s gauge
bomb well carriers have shock absorbing springs and elastomer cushions and, for best
results, can be filled with hydraulic fluid or inhibitor grease. This helps protect the
gauges and extend the service life of the gauge downhole.

Application
A variety of materials are available for use in O-Rings. The oil field industry has relied
on 4 common materials. HNBR (Nitrile), Viton, Aflas, and FFKM (Chemraz, Kalraz,
Perflas) are all common trade names for popular oil field elastomers.

Generally, as you move from HNBR to FFKM you gain chemical resistance and cost, but
lose mechanical strength.

Features
Hyrdrogenated Nitrile (HNBR. HSN) = Nitrile is a low-temperature performer with
limited chemical resistance. Superior mechanical characteristics, particularly
high strength helps reduce extrusion and wear. Do not use with ketones,
esthers, strong acids, or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
Fluorocarbon (FKM) Viton = Has an excellent resistance to high temperatures,
ozone, oxygen, mineral oil, synthetic hydraulic fluids, fuels, aromatics and many
organic solvents and chemicals. Low-temperature resistance is generally not
favorable. Do not use with glycol, organic acids, or steam.
Tetrafluoroethylene-Propylene (TFE) Aflas = This elastomer has an excellent
chemical resistance across a wide range of aggressive media. Do not use with
aromatics, ketones, or chlorides.
Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) Chemraz = Perfluroelastomer (FFKM) currently offers
the highest operating temperature range, the most comprehensive chemical
compatibility, and the lowest off-gassing and extractable levels of any rubber
material.

Roller Centralizer
Application
The Roller Centralizer is a mechanical device that centralizes a tool string while it is run
in or out of the wellbore. Hardened steel rollers on the contact points prevent wear on
the arms as they expand and contract to fit the wellbore.

The Roller Centralizer is positioned anywhere within the tool string. Often, two Roller
Centralizers are used in a string, one at the top and one near the bottom, to further
increase the string stability.

Benefits
The Roller Centralizer has low friction, allowing it to move easily in and out of the
wellbore. The wheels on the Roller Centralizer are easily replaceable and relatively
inexpensive.

This all started with a ping-pong table...

We were four friends with two things in common: a knack for

engineering and no jobs. After the 2006 oil crash, we began
using James’ basement to meet and create downhole tools.
Although the basement wasn’t our ideal workspace, we
made it work, including using an old ping-pong table as a
surface to stage our shipments.

We wanted to make downhole pressure gauges that were

easy to use and that worked all of the time. At the time, too
many downhole elctronic products had high failure rates.
Thankfully, Katie found the calibration system too noisy.
Along with the ping-pong table, we moved into a massive
1,500 square foot commercial space. It seemed like a huge
risk.

Slowly but surely, we began to develop new designs and the

foundation for a healthy small business. A daring few joined
us and today our family has grown into a team of almost fif-

ty people. We occupy two offices in two countries with about
20,000 square feet of space (slightly bigger than a base-
ment). We opened a branch in Houston, TX and were award-
ed Red Deer Canada’s ‘2019 Business of the Year’ award.

Although we’ve changed a lot over the last fourteen years,

one thing remains the same...that ping-pong table looks
good in our offices.
