• Hallmarks of Scientific Research (in your respective streams)
o Purposiveness, Rigor, Testability, Replicability, Precision and Confidence, Objectivity,
Generalizability, Parsimony
• Approaches to Research
o Briefly discuss on different types of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method research
• Importance of research and role of theory in research (12 Hours)
Formulating Research Question, Hypothesis and Objectives
• The broad problem area
• Nature of information to be gathered.
• Defining the problem statement with help of SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals).
• Designing research questions under different research approaches
• Types of hypotheses and steps to develop an effective hypothesis
• How to frame SMART Research objectives with action verbs (10 Hours)
Literature Review
• Different Data sources
o Journals, Thesis, Conference proceedings, Reports, Textbooks and book chapters
• Searching for literature with Boolean operators in various databases
• Different types of literature Review, Defining a “review”. (10 Hours)
Sampling and data collection
• Sample survey versus census
• Steps in sampling design
• Sampling methods (random and non-random sampling methods)
• Criteria for choice of sampling methods
• Data Collection methods: traditional and digital methods (4 Hours)

• Steps in Scale development
• Reliability: Cronbach’s Alpha, Test-retest reliability

Research Components with Statistical Inputs
• Types of Variables, Types of Data (primary, secondary)
• Scales of Measurement
• Graphical representation of data: Bar/pie diagrams, Histogram/box plots, Line charts, Scatter

• Descriptive Statistics: Measures of Central tendency and Measures of Dispersion

Assessments:

Assessment pattern for the course shall be as mentioned below:

Assessment 1: MCQ covering all the content of the course (20% weightage); centralized,
conducted by the course coordinator

Assessment 2: Develop a ‘review of literature section’ of protocol (40% weightage) assessed by


the PhD supervisor on direction from the coordinator of the Research Methodology coursework

Assessment 3: Develop a protocol (all sections except ‘review of literature’) as per MAHE
template for PhD Protocol Submissions (40% weightage) assessed by the PhD supervisor on
direction from the coordinator of the Research Methodology coursework.
