Little Penguin Pip

amigurumi pattern by Irene Strange

CURIOUS AMIGURUMI PATTERNS


Materials: Crochet Terms:
This pattern uses 2 different weights of yarn - a chunky Pattern is written in US Crochet Terms. The following
fluffy texture for the body and wings and a DK-weight stitches are used:
cotton for the rest. These are the yarns used in the sample:

Yarn A James C Brett Flutterby Chunky chain stitch (ch)


(100g/175m/192yds) - 1 ball in Light Grey (B29) slip stitch (slst)
Yarn B: Ricorumi (25gr/57m/62yds) - 2 balls in Black (060) single crochet (sc)
Yarn C: Ricorumi (25gr/57m/62yds) - 1 ball in White (001) increase (inc)

Small amount of grey yarn for embroidery decrease (dec)


4.5mm hook - used with Yarn A invisible decrease (inv dec)
3.5mm hook - used with Yarn B and C. decrease 3 stitches in 1 (sc3tog)
12mm safety eyes magic ring
Scissors
round (rnd)
Darning needle
chain space (ch-sp)
Toy Stuffing
Dressmakers Pins
Repeating sections within the rounds are shown
Stitch Marker
in (round) brackets followed by how many times
The finished baby penguin made in similar yarns they are repeated, e.g. 6 times.
and a 4.5mmhook will be 28cm/11in tall.
Stitch totals are shown in [square] brackets at the end
Yarn A alternatives: of each round.
Phildar Phil Velours (100g/180m/196yds per ball)
Peter Pan Precious Chunky (50g/75m/82yds per ball) Images are referenced in {curly} brackets,
e.g. {img 7} within the main pattern text.
You can also hold different yarns together to create
the fluffy texture, but be sure to check the gauge!
Yarn B/C alternatives:
Any DK/light worsted weight yarn in similar colours,
such as Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK or DMC Happy Cotton.

Gauge:
If you want to match the sample gauge make
a small circle in your chosen yarn:

Rnd 1: Start 6sc in a magic ring [6]


Rnd 2: inc in all 6 st [12]
Rnd 3: (1sc, inc in next st) 6 times [18]
Fasten off.

When made in Yarn A with 4.5mm hook this circle is


about 4cm/1 ½in in diameter. Matching the exact gauge
isn’t essential, but may produce a bigger or smaller
penguin. Remember to keep stitches close together
amigurumi-style!

1. Body
Make 1 in Yarn A.
Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: inc in all 6 st [12]
Rnd 3: (1sc, inc in next st) 6 times [18]
Rnd 4: (2sc, inc in next st) 6 times [24] 4 5 6
Rnd 5: (3sc, inc in next st) 6 times [30]
Rnd 6: (4sc, inc in next st) 6 times [36]
Rnd 7: (5sc, inc in next st) 6 times [42]
Rnd 8: (6sc, inc in next st) 6 times [48]
Rnd 9 - 18: sc in all 48 st - 10 rounds total {img 1-2}
Next rounds shape shoulders. {img 3}
Rnd 19: (inc in next 3 st, 21sc) 2 times [54]
Rnd 20: sc in all 54 sts [54] 7 8 9
Rnd 21: (1sc, inc in next st) 3 times, 21sc,

Place a stitch marker to help track next rounds. {img 4}
Rnd 22 - 26: sc in all 60 sts - 5 rounds total
Rnd 27: (9sc, inc in next st) 6 times [66]
Rnd 28 - 35: sc in all 66 sts - 8 rounds total
Rnd 36: (5sc, inc in next st, 5sc) 3 times, 33sc [69] 10 11
Rnd 37 - 41: sc in all 69 sts - 5 rounds total
The increase in next round starts the tail. Check it will
be in the visual centre of the body, if it’s too far to the
left undo some of the single crochets to move it back
to the centre, and start the next round straight after
the increase. The increases over next 3 rounds will
be worked into the middle stitch of previous round’s

Divide the remaining Yarn A into 2 equal size balls Rnd 23: slst in next st, skip the rest.

All other parts are made in DK weight c otton yarn

3. Beak
Make in Yarn B with 3.5mm hook. 
Rnd 1: Start 5 sc in a magic ring [5]
Rnd 2 - 3: sc in all 5 sts - 2 rounds total
Rnd 4: 3sc in next st, 2sc, 3sc in next st, 1sc [9]
Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing. {img 12-13} 14 15 16

4. Face
Make in Yarn C with 3.5mm hook.
Ch6, start 2nd ch from hook, work in a roundalong both
sides of the starting chain.
Rnd 1: (3sc in first st, 3sc) 2 times [12] {img 14}
Rnd 2: (inc three times, 3 sc) 2 times [18]
Rnd 3: (1sc, inc in next st) 3 times, 3 sc, 17 18 19
(inc in next st, 1sc) 3 times, 3sc [24] {img 15}
Rnd 4: (2sc, inc in next st) 3 times, 3sc, (inc in next st, 2sc)
3 times, 3sc [30]

5. Top of the Head


Make in Yarn B with 3.5mm hook.
Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: (inc in next st, 1sc) 3 times [9]
Rnd 3 - 5: sc in all 9 sts - 3 rounds total
Rnd 6: (inc in next st, 2sc) 3 times [12]
Rnd 7: sc in all 12 sts.
Rnd 8: (inc in next st, 3sc) 3 times [15]
Rnd 9: sc in all 15 sts, turn {img 17}
Work in rows for the rest of the piece, turning work 
at the end of each row. 
Row 10: ch1 (does not count as st), 3sc in next st, 3  sc,
inc in next st, 3sc, 3sc in next st, skip the remaining sts,

Row 11 -12: ch1, sc in all 14 sts, turn - 2 rows total
Row 13: ch1, inc in first st, 12sc, inc in last st, turn [16]
Row 14: ch1, inc in first st, 14sc, inc in last st, turn [18]

Row 16: ch1, 3sc in first st, 18sc, 3sc in last st, turn [24]

Row 24 - 27: ch1, sc in all 36 sts, turn - 4 rows total

Next we will make the feet. Each foot is made up of 3 toes 22 23 24
joined together with a round of single crochet. 

6. Toes
Make 4 in Yarn B with 3.5mm hook.
Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: (inc in next st, 1sc) 3 times [9]
Rnd 3 - 6: sc in all 9 sts - 4 rounds total
Fasten off. These will be joined to the foot shortly. 25 26 27

7. Third Toe and Foot


Make 2 in Yarn B with 3.5mm hook.
Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: (inc in next st, 1sc) 3 times [9]
Rnd 3 - 6: sc in all 9 sts - 4 rounds total
Now join the toes together to make a foot. Hold two of
the previously made toes next to the one you are currently
making, carry on working in a round along the top edge
of all three toes.
Rnd 7: 4sc along the middle toe, 9sc along t he last toe,
5sc along the middle toe, 9  sc along the first toe [27]
Rnd 8 - 12: sc in all 27 sts - 5 rounds total.
Rnd 13: (inv dec, 7sc) 3 times [24]
Rnd 14: (2sc, inv dec) 6 times [18] 
Add stuffing to all the toes and foot. 
Rnd 15: (1sc, inv dec) 6 times [12]
Rnd 16: inv dec 6 times [6]
Fasten off and sew up the tip.
Sew up any gaps between the toes with the yarn tail.

Finishing up:
