One night the phone rings. The man picks it up. The caller immediately hangs up.

Mohamath Khan is egoistical and short tempered and will do what he considers right

in a state of mental shock, desperation and defeat. She loses her will to live. Murty
decides to take her back to the village. But a spate of events during the journey back
to the village leaves Rangajji physically wounded. Murty tries to take control of the
situation, but a small boy that he is, he fails. The climax of the film shows Rangajji in an
unconscious state lying in the police station, while Murty, afraid the police might arrest
him for murder, makes a desperate getaway.

Percy, an awkward young man of 28, lives with his aged mother in an old house
tucked away in the Parsi colony in Bombay. Though Banubai, Percy’s mother, utterly
dominates Percy’s life, she does so with love and kindness. Percy holds a clerical
position in a small Unani pharmacy, famous for its sexual restoratives. It is only at
his place of work, where he wields some power, that Percy displays a measure of
authority and self-assurance. One day, Percy discovers a fraud in the office accounts,
as a consequence of which one of the junior employees is sacked. This event has far-
reaching consequences in the lives of Percy and Banubai. Percy’s peace is soon to
be shattered.

kills Subbaish, Padma waits in vain for the reward.

The film is set in a Central Asian desert in the 1st Century B.C. A sandstorm strikes the

A desolate bus stop on a highway…the figure of a village woman, Balo, waiting to
deliver a meal to Sucha Singh, the husband, a bus driver. He expects the traditional
duties of an average Indian rural wife. Balo in turn accepts her husband’s independent

Balo hurries to the bus stop. She is late delivering the meal, trying to save her younger

an epic novella and aptly called it The Last Poem. Amit Ray, Oxford educated, self-
absorbed and highly eccentric travels to Shillong. A chance meeting with Labanya Materials
leads to a heady romance and he immediately proposes marriage to her. They find HD MOV, Film Stills, Posters
profound, peace and freedom in each other. While, Amit can’t wait to marry Labanya,
she remains skeptical and is convinced that marriage will wear out the novelty of their
romance. Amit, deeply involved with Labanya and their future neglects responding to

Tagore’s attaining of a unified vision of internationalism in a period of colonialism was Saswata Chaterjee, Rishi Mukherjee,
no mean achievement. Growing up in the capital city of our erstwhile British masters, Raima Sen, Anirban Ghosh,
a motherless child sequestered in an opulent zamindar mansion, he was cared for Rituparno Ghosh
perfunctorily by maids and man-servants, and largely left to his own devices. He ran
away from school time and again, mostly out of boredom, and had eventually to be Materials
tutored at home with no fixed curriculum. Right from Tagore’s early childhood to his SD MOV
late years the film beautifully captures the thinking, feeling, loving human being, in love
with the world and all its living creatures.

to the great bard by making thirteen
short films based on thirteen poems
Thrayadashee is a compilation of thirteen short films adapted to the screen from
of Tagore. I chose to make films out of
poems penned by Rabindranath Tagore. Each film narrates myriad themes of solitude,
Tagore’s poems not only because it
singularity, border, religion, love, relationship, betrayal in profound cinematic language.
was his collection of poems, Gitanjali
which brought Tagore the Nobel
but also because his poems open a
limitless horizon of images, images
that transcend one to a second world.

The poems, I have selected to work

on, have the quality of timelessness.
They evoke amazing contemporary
conflicts and dilemmas of life and
have universality that can reach out

Quartret 1 is a set of four of those
thirteen films compiled for theatrical
releases and festival participation.

“Admittedly, Dasgupta’s work has always had a lyrical

quality about it. One could never miss a sense of
poetry in many of his movies – beginning from Bagh
Bahadur to Charachar to Uttara to Lal Darja to Janala.
So, if at all there was someone worthy of adapting
Tagore’s poems, it was undoubtedly Dasgupta.

The Festival screened four segments out of the 13:

The Flutist, The Pond, The Dark Maiden and The
Station, and titled them as Quartet These were pure
cinema, marked by a beautiful economy of words, and
visualised with brilliant imagination.”
