1. A sample of 36 data values, 𝑥, gave ∑(𝑥 − 45) = −148 and ∑(𝑥 − 45)2 = 3089.

i) Find the mean and standard deviation of the 36 values. [3]

ii) One extra data value was added to the sample. Find the standard deviation of all 37
values. [4]

2. The amounts of money, 𝑥 dollars, that 24 people had in their pockets are summarized by
∑(𝑥 − 36) = −60 and ∑(𝑥 − 36)2 = 227.76. Find ∑𝑥 and ∑𝑥 2 . [6]

3. Prices in dollars of 11 caravans in show room are as follows.

16 00 18 500 17 700 14 300 15 500 15 300 16 100 16 800 17 300 15 400 16 400

a) Represent these prices by a stem-and-leaf diagram. [4]

b) Find the median and the quartiles for this distribution. [6]
c) Draw a box plot to represent these data. [4]
d) Give one advantage of using
i) a stem and leaf diagram
ii) a box plot,
to illustrate data such as that given above. [2]

4. An unbiased tetrahedral die has faces marked 1, 2, 3, 4. If the die lands on the face
marked 1, the player has to play 15 USD. If it lands on a face marked with a 2 or a 4, the
player wins 7 USD and if it lands on a 3, the player wins 4 USD. Find the expected gain in
one throw. [5]

5. In a simple model of the weather in October, each day is classified as either fine or
rainy. The probability that a fine day is followed by a fine day is 0.8. The probability that
a rainy day is followed by a fine day is 0.4. The probability that that 1October is fine is
0.75.

a) Find the probability that 2 October is fine and the probability that 3 October is
fine. [3]
b) Find the conditional probability that 3 October is rainy given that 1 October is
fine. [4]
c) Find the conditional probability that 1 October is fine, given that 3 October is
rainy. [4]

6. The probability that the school bus is on time on any particular day is 0.6. If the bus is

on time the probability that Sam the driver gets a cup of coffee is 0.9. If the bus is not on

time the probability that Sam gets a cup of coffee is 0.3.

i) Find the probability that Sam gets a cup of coffee. [3]

ii) Given that Sam does not get a cup of coffee, find the probability that that the

bus is not on time. [4]

7. A school-parent teacher committee of 5 members is to be formed from 6 parents, 2

teachers and the Principal. In how many ways can the committee be formed in order to
include,

a) the Principal, [3]

b) exactly four parents, [3]
c) not more than 4 parents. [4]

a) if there are no restriction on choice, [3]
b) if the youngest two players and at most one of the oldest two players are to be
included. [5]

9. In a golf tournament, the number of times in a day that a ‘hole-in-one’ is scored is

denoted by the variable X, which has a Poisson distribution with mean 0.15. Mr Kuna
offers to pay $200 each time that a hole-in-one is scored during 5 days of play. Find the
expectation and variance of the amount that Mr Kuna pays. [4]

10.
a) In a certain country, 68% of households have a printer. Find the probability
that, in a random sample of 8 households, 5, 6 or 7 households have a
printer.. [4]
b) Use an approximation to find the probability that, in a random sample of 500
households, more than 337 households have a printer. [4]
c) Justify your use of the approximation in part (b). [1]
