T here are two kinds of software engineers: those who care about
programming languages, and those who don’t. If you ask me, neither
of the groups are wrong or right. The former care about working on projects
that use cutting-edge technology, the latter care more about sticking to the
tried-and-tested. There’s no convincing me either of these groups is adopting
the wrong career strategy. That said, regardless of how you set up your
programming career, keeping an eye on progress has never hurt anyone. I
tend to lean a bit towards the latter group, but find myself curious enough to

conclusions. The Tiobe Index is one of my reliable sources of such trends,
and this October’s numbers are worth taking a closer look at.
