Course Description/Rational:
In Engineering Mathematics, Differential Equations (D.Es.) is known as one of the important mathematical
course. In mathematics, a differential equation is an equation that relates one or more functions and their
derivatives. In applications, the functions generally represent physical quantities, the derivatives represent their
rates of change, and the differential equation defines a relationship between the two. Because such relations are
extremely common, differential equations play a prominent role in many disciplines including engineering,
physics, economics, and biology. While the Fourier transform of a function is a complex function of a real
variable (frequency), the Laplace transform of a function is a complex function of a complex variable. The
Laplace transform is usually restricted to transformation of functions of t with t ≥ 0. A consequence of this
restriction is that the Laplace transform of a function is a holomorphic function of the variable. In mathematics,
a Fourier series is a periodic function composed of harmonically related sinusoids, combined by a weighted
summation. With appropriate weights, one cycle of the summation can be made to approximate an arbitrary
function in that interval. As such, the summation is a synthesis of another function. The discrete-time Fourier
transform is an example of Fourier series.
Course Objective
This course intended the learner to the basic idea of Differential Equations, Laplace
Transforms, and Fourier Series with application in engineering sectors, specifically..
To learn about the formation of differential equations.
To convert the engineering problem to differential equations and to find the
relation between the variables
To learn the basic concept of Laplace Transforms and Fourier Series.
To transform a function into Laplacian form.
To transform a domain/function into Fourier series.
Course Learning Outcome: (at the end of the course, student will be able to do:)
CLO1 Knowledge of mathematics and Differential Equations (D.Es), formulate the model using velocity and
acceleration of a character after the command is given.
CLO2 To give an ability to apply knowledge of Differential Equations on engineering problems and to find
the relation between the variables after solving the problems.
CLO3 Understand the concept of Laplace and Inverse Laplace Transform and able to determine Laplace and
Inverse Laplace transforms of various engineering problems.
CLO4 Able to use Inverse Laplace transforms to determine general or complete solutions to linear ODEs and
helps to determine the Fourier series of various domain or functions of engineering problems.
