What percentage of the products weigh more than 5.5 kg? [8 marks]

3. A researcher wants to investigate the relationship between the number of hours studied and
the exam scores obtained by a group of students. The data for 10 students are given in the
table below:
Hours 3 5 7 2 8 9 6 1 4 5
Studied (X)

SECTION B [75 marks]

Answer all questions in this section.

1. In a book club, 60% of the members read fiction, 40% read non-fiction, and 20% read both
fiction and non-fiction. A member is selected randomly.
a) Determine the probability that the selected member reads fiction or non-fiction. [3 marks]
b) Are reading fiction and reading non-fiction independent events for the members of the book
club? Provide justification. [4 marks]
c) If a member is selected randomly from the book club, what is the probability that they read
either fiction or non-fiction books, but not both? [3 marks]

2. a) Let X be a binomial random variable with n = 15 and p = 0.4. Find:

i) P(X = 5) [2 marks]
ii) P(X > 8) [2 marks]
iii) P(X < 3) [2 marks]

b) If X ~ Po(λ ) and P( X = 4) = 3P( X = 3) , find λ and P( X = 5) . [5 marks]

3. The probability that a patient recovers from a certain disease is 0.6. A hospital plans to conduct
a study on 200 patients who have the disease. Using a suitable approximate distribution,
a) Find the probability that between 100 and 130 patients recover. [6 marks]
b) Determine the value of n such that the probability that the number of patients who
recover is at least n is 0.95. [6 marks]

4. A survey was conducted among 400 people to determine their preferred mode of transportation
to work. The following table shows the two-way classification of the results by gender:
Gender Car Bus Bike Walk
Male 120 80 30 10
Female 50 60 40 10
If a person is selected at random from the survey participants, find the probability that the
person:
a) Prefers to walk to work. [3 marks]
b) Is a female who prefers to use a bike or walk. [3 marks]
c) Prefers to use a car given that the person is male. [3 marks]

5. The probability that a detective vending machine will dispenser a canned drink when
properly cooperated is 3/5 . on a particular day, 150 people use the machine to purchase a
drink.
a) Find the expected number of people who obtained a drink from that machine. [5 marks]
b) Find the standard deviation of the number of people who obtained a drink from this
machine [6 marks]

6. The weights of a group of female students in a university are normally distributed with a mean
of 60 kg and a standard deviation of 3 kg. Let X be the weight of a randomly selected female
student.
a) Find the probability that a randomly selected female student weighs less than 57 kg.
[5 marks]
b) Find the weight that separates the lightest 30% from the rest of the female students.
[5 marks]

7. A survey was conducted to gather data on the number of hours students spend studying for
an exam and their corresponding grades. The data collected is shown in the table below:
Student Hours Studied (X) Grade (Y)
1 2 70
2 3 75
3 5 85
4 2 65
5 4 80
6 6 90

8 7 94
9 8 96
10 6 88

a) Find the correlation coefficient between the hours studied and the grade received.
[5 marks]
b) Calculate the coefficient of determination and interpret your answer. [4 marks]
c) Find the regression line equation and interpret the value of the slope coefficient.
[3 marks]

END OF QUESTION PAPER

Answers:
SECTION A
1. (a) 7 (b) 0.9544.
2. The average weight is 5.92 kg. the percentage approximately 61.03%
3. (a) r = 0.9816
(b) equation of the regression line is:
Y = 28.92 + 7.917X

SECTION B
1. (a) 0.8 (b) not independent (c) 0.6
2. (a) i. 0.1859 ii. 0.0950 iii. 0.0271 (b) λ = 12 and P(X = 5) = 0.01274
3. (a) 0.91222 (b) 110
4. (a) 0.05 (b) 0.125 (c) 0.5
5. (a) 90 (b) 6
6. (a) 0.1587 (b) 58.42 kg
7. (a) r =0.9788
Interpret: There is a strong positive linear correlation relationship between the number of
hours students spend studying for an exam and their corresponding grades.
(b) Coefficient of determination,r2=(0.9788)2
=95.80%
Interpret: 0.9580 means that 95.80% of the variation in their corresponding grades
explained by the number of hours studied and 4.2% of the variation in their
corresponding grades is caused by the other factors.
(c) The linear regression equation is y=59.7403+4.8425x
Interpret: The value of b means that for every unit (1 hour) increase in the number of
hours students spend studying for an exam, there is an increase of 4.8425 in their
corresponding grades..
