1. For each of items (i) – (x), choose the correct answer among the given alternatives and write

(i) When ice melts to become water, which force must be overcome?

(v) The diagram shows a cross section through a rain water puddle formed in a shallow hole in
a road surface.

Answer all questions
3. (a) Why spirit poured on the skin feels much colder than the water at the same temperature?
Explain this.(4marks)
(b) How much thermal energy is needed to turn 3.0kg of water at 500C into steam at 1000C?
The specific heat capacity of water is 4200J/kg0C and latent heat of vaporization of
water is 2260kJ/kg.(5marks)
4. (a) Define vaporization and specific latent heat of vaporization of a substance. (4marks)
(b) Tour guide master at Kiwila water falls observed that, water fall from a height of 100m
to the bottom. Calculate the rise in temperature of water when it strikes the bottom.
Given 𝑐𝑤 = 4200J/kg0C and g = 10m/s2.(5maarks)

5. Figure below shows a refrigerator. Inside the pipes in the ice-box, a liquid boils and takes in
latent heat. The gas condenses in the pipes at the back of the refrigerator and thermal energy
(heat) leaves through the black metal fins.

(ii) Explain why the fins are black (3marks)
6. A container holds 1.5kg of ice initially at 400C.Heat is supplied to the container at the rate of
12.6kJ per minutes for 120 minutes.
(a) Plot a graph of temperature versus time for the 120 minutes during which heat is
supplied (5marks)
(b) What will be the temperature of the contents be at the end of 120 minutes? (1marks)
(c) What will be the mass of the steam at in the container at the end of 120 minutes?

7. (a) Explain why the temperature of methylated spirit decreases when air is blown over
it.(3marks)
(b) Porous canvas bags filled with water are used by travelers in hot weather. When the bags
are slung on the outside of a fast moving car, the water inside is cooled considerably.
Explain (3marks)
(c) When a certain quantity of heat was supplied to a substance, its temperature rose from
50C to 200C.What will the final temperature of the substance be if twice the amount of
heat is then removed from the sample? (3marks)
8. (a) Latent heat of fusion and latent heat of vaporization are “hidden”. Explain this.(3marks)
(b) A block of metal of mass 1.5kg which is suitably insulated is heated from 300 C to 500 C
in 8minutes and 20 seconds by an electric heater coil rated 54W. Calculate
(i) The quantity of heat supplied by the heater .(3marks)
(ii) The specific heat capacity of the block .(3marks)

9. (a) How can water be brought to a boil without heating it? (5marks)
(b) A plastic tray weighing 48g and containing 200g of water at 200C is put in a refrigerator
which abstract heat at a uniform rate of 2100J/min. Calculate the;
(i) The time taken for the tray and water to reach at 00C (5marks)
(ii) Total time taken to freeze all the water to ice at 00C. (5marks)
Given specific heat capacity of plastic = 1050J/kgK; specific latent heat of fusion of
water = 335000J/kg.
10. (a) Explain how the pressure cooker can cook food faster than an ordinary cooking utensil
with a loose-fitting lid. (5marks)
(b) A heater of 500w is used to raise the temperature of 50kg of material of specific heat
capacity of 960J/kgK, from 180C to 380C. Assume that all the heat from the heater is
given to the material. Calculate ;
(i) Heat capacity of the material (5marks)
(ii) The time taken in seconds (5marks)
11. (a) Evaporation is a cooling process. Explain (3marks)
(b) A block of aluminium, 500g at 200C was heated in a furnace at 6600C until it just melted.
(i) Find the total quantity of heat required (5marks)
(ii) If in this process the furnace consume 100litre of gas of calorific value 16800J/Litres.Find
its efficiency.(7marks)
Given specific heat capacity of aluminium, c = 920J/kgK
Latent heat of fusion aluminium, L = 3.2 × 105 J/kg.
