BASICS OF ENGINEERING EXPLORATION

1. Define Engineering.

2. Mention any five attributes of an engineer.

3. Write about the history of engineering in chronological order.

4. List three eminent personalities who studied engineering and briefly explain about
their contribution to the society.

5. The frequency of sine waveform is 500MHz. Amplitude is 1V (peak-to-peak). Find

the time period and wavelength. Draw the time-domain representation of sine
waveform for one-period.

6. Define: Gain & Attenuation.

7. Convert the power of 17mW into dBm units.

8. Determine the magnitude of the voltage across a 5 kΩ resistor if the current

flowing through it is (a) 2 mA; (b) 12 A; (c) −2 A.

9. Two 150 Ω resistors are connected in series to a voltage supply of 15 V. Find the
current flowing through each resistor. Calculate the voltage across each resistor
and the power it is dissipating.

10. Real resistors can only be manufactured to a specific tolerance, so that in effect
the value of the resistance is uncertain. For example, a 1 Ω resistor specified as
5% tolerance could in practice be found to have a value anywhere in the range of
0.95 to 1.05 Ω. Calculate the voltage across a 2.2 kΩ 10% tolerance resistor if the
current flowing through the element is 2.5 mA.

11. A section of communication equipment has two stages of amplification with gains
of 30 and 50 and two loss stages with attenuation factors of 0.3 and 0.75. The
output voltage is 3.2 V. What are the overall gain (or attenuation) and the input
voltage?
BASICS OF ENGINEERING EXPLORATION

12. A power amplifier has a gain of 45 dB. The input power is 20 mW. What is the
output power in mW?
BASICS OF ENGINEERING EXPLORATION

13. The maximum peaks of an electromagnetic wave are separated by a distance of

0.1m. What is the frequency in megahertz and in gigahertz?
BASICS OF ENGINEERING EXPLORATION
14. Three amplifier stages with gains of 17, 25, and 8 are cascaded; the input voltage
is 220 µV. What is the overall gain in dB and the output voltages of each stage?
BASICS OF ENGINEERING EXPLORATION

15. The input voltage of the voltage divider is 15V. The values of resistor R1, R2 is
100Ω, 200Ω respectively. Find the gain or attenuation factor. Determine the voltage
drop across R2.
