PREFACE
Thank you for purchase of the JRC Inmarsat-C, Mobile Earth Station, JUE-85.
• Please read this Installation manual carefully and carry out proper installation.
• Please use the manual when questions and troubles are caused in installation, by any chance.
i
ATTENTIONS BEFORE USING
• JRC cannot accept responsibility for any loss due to incorrect operation, malfunction and other
causes except product guarantee condition and liability by law.
• There is possibility that some functions of the terminal may not operate correctly depend on the
hardware and software version of equipment connected to the terminal. Please confirm your
equipment version before contact with the dealer or agent you purchased or JRC branches.
• Your communication data are transmitted via Inmarsat system and other global communications
system, so unusually some errors may occur in communication theory same as the landlines.
You are recommended to backup for your important data.
• Usually, digital scrambling of Inmarsat system protects your communication data privacy.
However you are recommended to understand that your communication data might be intercepted
by special technology and unauthorized access in the communication theory.
• Specifications of JUE-85 and its accessories may change without notice for improvement.
ii
BEFORE INSTALLATION
This manual and the terminal are indicated the following safety symbols for your correct operation
to prevent your and somebody’s injury or damage to the product and assets.
You should understand well them before reading this manual and operating the terminal.
DANGER
This symbol denotes that improper handling
poses a high risk of causing death or serious
injury.

CAUTIONS DURING INSTALLATION
DANGER
Do not touch any internal parts with your hands or tools to avoid danger of electronic
shock.
The lithium battery is built into JUE-85 (EME). Do not short-circuited of the
terminal, do not give the high impact, and wet it to water.
Those actions are dangerous against explosion.
WARNING
Do not bring JUE-85(EME) close to the fire, or put it in the fire. It causes the
explosion, generation of heat, and the ignition of a built-in lithium battery.
If a foreign substances, such as metal fragment, water, liquid and etc., are get into
your JUE-85, turn off the power and contact with the agent you purchased or JRC
branches. Continuous operation may cause fire, electrical shock or malfunction.
Do not turn on the terminal under the primary power except the specific voltage
(mentioned below). The primary power except the specific voltage may cause fire,
electrical shock or malfunction.
DC+24V(+19.2 V to +31.2 V) (When standard PSU, NBD-843A is used)
Do not adjust the internal circuit or exchange the parts because the internal circuit is
adjusted strictly. When an abnormal operation is found, please contact with our sales
department or nearest branch office.
Do not take apart, and do not remodel the equipment. It causes a fire, the electric
shock, and the breakdown.
v
WARNING
Fixing EME to the mounting adapter should be done on a deck or in a cabin before
climbing to a mast. When parts or apparatuses are fallen, it may strike a human
body and it may cause injury.
Ask our agency or office to dispose JUE-85 (EME). Do not dispose JUE-85
illegally. It becomes cause of heat-up, firing, or explosion by shorted circuit of
lithium battery, which is affected by the impact or submerged of water.
CAUTION
Before operating JUE-85, read the operation manual carefully.
Inappropriate procedure may cause incorrect operation or malfunction.
<<EME>>
Do not give mechanical shock and force, because all units of EME are precision
instrument. Unwanted shock and force may cause malfunction.
Do not paint radome. Painting of radome may cause decrease of the communication
quality.

2 INSTALLATION PLAN
2.1 EME
When the EME is installed in higher position to avoid the physical obstruction, the EME may be often
exposed to the severe vibration condition. Therefore, special attention should be paid in such an
installation site to reduce vibrations.
NOTE
Follow the matters mentioned below to avoid damage of EME and malfunction of JUE-85.
・EME should be installed [4]m or more away from VHF and Satellite Navigator antenna.
・EME should be installed [2]m or more away from the rotating area of radar scanner.
・EME should be installed with [2]m or more away from each other, when two sets of EME of
Inmarsat-C (JUE-75A/C, JUE-85, 95SA and 95VM) are equipped in same ship.
・EME should be installed avoiding heat and smoke of funnel and much dust.
2-1
2.2 Support structure
Support structure should be designed on the basis of load specification.
Support structure should be designed on the basis of load specification shown in Fig.2.2.1.1.
Correct the actual, maximum bend moment, with changing the height of installation pole.
Strength and the rigidity against a mass of EME, maximum bending moment and vibration are required
of the position where EME is being installed.
Allowable vibration level is 1.0G (980 gal) or less at the top of installation pole. The level is easily
known by Fig. 2.2.1.2.

3.2 Cable
NOTE
Following matters are required to avoid damaging cable and breakdown of equipments.
• Avoid cutting off the EME-IME Coaxial cable unnecessary. Coil and secure the coaxial
cable in convenient compartment such as behind the Main Unit or bulkhead.
• Take care not to damage the connectors and the corrosion resistant sheath of cable.
(1) The connector plugs installed on both coaxial ends are adaptable to connector receptacles of either
EME or IME.
3-2
3.2.1 Preparation for Coaxial cable connector
Connecter part of Coaxial cable is covered with vinyl tape as below mentioned figure.
3-3
3.3 EME
DANGER
The lithium battery is built into JUE-85 (EME). Do not short-circuited of the
terminal, do not give the high impact, and wet it to water.
These actions are dangerous against explosion.
WARNING
Fixing EME to the mounting adapter should be done on a deck or in a cabin before
climbing to a mast. When parts or apparatuses fall, it may strike a human body
and it may cause injury.
CAUTION
<<EME>>
Do not give mechanical shock and force, because all units of EME are precision
instrument. Unwanted shock and force may cause malfunction.
Do not paint radome. Painting of radome may cause decrease of the communication
quality.

3.4 IME
Installation site of IME should be determined taking into consideration of operability and
maintainability.
NOTE
The IME should be installed 2.5 m or more away from MF/HF antenna feeders.

3-13
3.4.2 Grounding IME with copper plate
For proper performance of INMARSAT-C system on an abroad ship, it is required to obtain a suitable
ground for IME. Using the copper plate, connect the ground terminal on the rear panel to the vessel’s
grounding point and keep the line as short as possible.
3-14
3.4.3 Connecting IME coaxial cable to IME
Connect IME coaxial cable to IME with referring below mentioned NOTE.
NOTE
Do not connect the IME coaxial cable when power switch is turned ON.
It causes the malfunction when short-circuited because the current is superimposed in connecter of
antenna on IME rear side.

3.7 Abandonment work
3.7.1 Disposal of JUE-85
When disposing JUE-85, process it in accordance with the rules of the pertinent local government.
WARNING
Ask our agency or office to dispose JUE-85 (EME). Do not dispose JUE-85
illegally. It becomes cause of heat-up, firing, or explosion by shorted circuit of
lithium battery, which is affected by the impact or submerged of water.
Contact the dealer or agent from which you purchased the device or one of our branches,
marketing offices, and representative offices when the battery exchange is needed.
There is no influence in other telecommunication functions though the reception message and the
call log, etc. cannot be preserved in the power discontinuity, when the capacity of the lithium
battery is lost.
