Australia Awards 11
Being a recipient of the Australia Awards
Scholarship in The University of Adelaide (UoA) for
the past 4 years has been a valuable and exciting
journey. As a PhD candidate, the AAS and the UoA
have provided the greatest support not only to my
academic study but also extracurricular activities
and personal life.

Throughout my candidature, I have had

opportunities to present my research at both
national and international conferences, as well
as attending many professional development
activities. These would not be possible without
the SAS funding provided by the AAS. As part of
the UoA, I also had the privilege to participate in
industry mentoring program (IMNIS), 3-Minute-
Thesis and Visualise Your Thesis competitions
- which have given me great experience in public
speaking, science communication and opportunity
to broadening my professional networks.

Studying abroad in the midst of pandemic has been

difficult but having great people around me, the
AAS and the UoA, have made things much better
and I am very grateful to be an AA scholar.”
Yoko Brigitte Wang (Indonesia)
PhD (Medicine and Surgery)

“It was a whole new experience for

my wife, two children and I given the
metropolitan environment here. But
we enjoyed it - you can easily find your
way around and people greet you on
the streets. Adelaide is a really good
environment to study in, with the
University located in the city.
The Master of Arts has given me
a broader understanding of the media
landscape and what I have done as
a journalist. With the mentoring and
research skills gained, I am looking
forward to pass the knowledge on
to journalists in my home country
and the Pacific region.
Priestley Humphrey Habru (Solomon Islands)
Master of Arts
The education alone has transformed me
into a better individual and more skilled
professional. It has brought me new
skills, improved my critical thinking, and
exposed me to new connections that are
meaningful towards my career. Because of
the scholarship, I had the chance to lead
TEDxUniAdelaide and meet interesting
speakers – some were Rhodes Scholars and
University of Adelaide alumni; the former
Chief Entrepreneur of South Australia;
an Aboriginal Arts curator; and many
accomplished students from our university.”
Jerald Laparan (Philippines)
Master of Applied Innovation and Entrepreneurship

“I am so grateful to have received this

scholarship because I have gained
knowledge on how to become more
professional and a good teacher.
It has encouraged me to contribute
to the development of my country,
particularly through my teaching
profession. I have missed out on some
opportunities due to the pandemic,
such as international conferences on
education. However, I did a six-month
online course on speech to improve
my English pronunciation, which was
an excellent learning experience. I also
did online courses in LinkedIn learning
through the University of Adelaide.
These courses have also led me to be
more professional in performing my
duties and responsibilities as a teacher.
They have changed my perspective
to be more open-minded and creative.
Umbelina Cardoso (Timor-Leste)
Master of Education
