THE USE OF “so .... that” ..... and “such .... that ......

A. “so ...that ...”

It expresses a cause effect. The examples are as follows:

 Cause : It was too windy


Effect : We couldn’t go sailing

It was so windy that we couldn’t go sailing


(windy is adjective)
 Cause :The dress was wonderfully designed
Effect : Its cost was really expensive

The dress was so wonderfully designed that Its costs was really expensive
(wonderfully is adverb)
 Cause : I spent much money for shopping
Effect : There was nothing left in my wallet

I spent so much money for shopping that there was nothing left in my wallet.

The pattern of the sentences using “so .... that .....” are
so+ adjective/adverb/ quantifier + that
“so” is followed by adjective/ adverb/ quantifier (many, much, few, little)

B. “such ...that ....”

It expresses a cause effect. The examples are as follows;

 Cause : Adele is a talented singer.


Effect : She gets many awards in Grammy.

Adele is such a talented singer that she gets many awards in Grammy.

 Cause : Rocky got a very important call from his office


Effect : He drove to the office in hurry.

Rocky got such an important call from his office that he drove to the office in hurry.

The pattern of the sentences using “such .... that ....” are
such + adjective+noun+that
“such” is followed by noun phrase (adjective+noun)

EXERCISES
A. Complete the sentences with “so” or “such”!
1. She has ...... many friends that she will not easily get bored.
2. Jimmy and Ken ..... clever that all their friends usually ask their help to understand the
lesson.
3. Pipo is ..... a nice dog that it never barks.
4. Those are .... great pictures that I can’t take my eyes of them.
5. I am .... bored that I just want to sleep.
6. Our neighbours are .... kind that they let us borrow their vacuum cleaner.
7. Paramitha dances .... gracefully that all the audiences gives applause to her performance.
8. Hawaii has ..... amazing beaches that many tourists come to the place
