STEN 4005: Advanced Concrete Design and Construction

Assignment 2: Bridge Design and Construction
Submission by Week 13, 18th Oct, 4pm
(Online submission through Blackboard, or in-class submission)

General: Assignment 2: Bridge Design and Construction

Groups: Completed in a team of three to your choice. A separate contribution

statement to be signed by all group member and submitted together with
Assignment 2. The form is provided in Appendix or on Blackboard

Task: A new bridge is required to replace an existing bridge in Western Australia,

as shown in Figure 1. The client of the project uses an open-competition
approach for bidders to propose the design and construction of the new
bridge. Meaning that bidders can propose any bridge types and
construction methods. The client’s intent is to optimise between the bridge
aesthetics and the construction cost and time. Minimising disruption to
existing road users and reducing environmental impact is also a key
objective. The span of the bridge can be estimated from google map.

Activities: 1. Construction: propose a construction method for the bridge

construction, with detail indicating the construction cost and time. The
outcome of this activity is to be included in the A3-sheet summary (with
Activity 1)
*Tip: consider manufacture, lifting, construction, etc. yielding project
constrains.

2. Preliminary Design: (i) propose a concrete bridge type, configuration

and spanning, (ii) state specifications, relevant standards, any design
and construction considerations, and justification of your design choice
(iii) provide a preliminary design (based on simplified-hand-calculation
design concepts and software such as Autodesk) to support the
feasibility of the proposed bridge type, (iv) state other necessary
assumptions, for example, loading, foundation type/locations, sea
levels, wind and vibration considerations, construction requirements,
etc., and (iv) submit a one-side A3 sheet summary to present the
outcome of this preliminary design, including drawings and descriptions
of the detail covering the key points of this activity and the construction
method.
3. Oral Presentation: see more detail under the Oral Presentation
section below.
4. Teamwork and self-management: organise meetings; ensure
compatibility between individual work & member-contribution;
academic writing; report presentation (structure, formatting and
referencing)

Format: An A3-sheet (one side) presented with the names of the group
members is to be submitted.

The writing is expected to be concise, clear and professionally

presented. The minimum font size is 11 point.

Marks: This assignment contributes 50% to the total unit mark. Marks will be
awarded for the content, feasibility of solution, decision justification(s)
and application of referenced data sources, public safety of solution,
clarity, level of detail, format and, style/presentation. The allocation of
the marks shall be based on group and individual marks. If individual
activities are not stated, all marks will be distributed equally.

Oral Groups shall present two components:

Presentation 1) The detail of the proposed new Bridge given in Assignment Two,
: according to the detail described in the Activities section. There is NO
limit in the number of the PowerPoint slides.

The total presentation time per group is 7 minutes, Q & A is 2 minutes.

The presentation is a peer-assessment and the attendance of all group
members is required.
