Questions on volume of solids

NOTE:
• Use the graphing calculator to visualize the regions mentioned; think, try, and discuss.

• I do not expect everyone to solve all the problems. But give it a thought and try to come
up with some suggestions.

1. A pyramid 3 m high has a square base of 3 m on a side. The cross-section of the pyramid
perpendicular to the altitude x m down from the vertex is a square x m on a side. Find
the volume of the pyramid.

2. A curved wedge is cut from a circular cylinder of radius 3 by two planes. One plane is
perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder. The second plane crosses the first plane at a
45° angle at the center of the cylinder. Find the volume of the wedge.

3. The circle x2 +y 2 = a2 is rotated about the x-axis to generate a sphere. Set up an integral
to find the volume.

4. Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region between the parabola
x = y 2 + 1 and the line x = 3 about the line x = 3. (Think about how to approach this
problem.)

5. The region bounded by the curve y = x2 + 1 and the line y = x + 3 is revolved about the
x-axis to generate a solid. Find the volume of the solid.

6. () The solid lies between planes perpendicular to the x-axis at x = −π/3 and x = π/3.
The cross-sections perpendicular to the x-axis are

(a) circular disks with diameters running from the curve y = tan x to the curve y = sec x.
(b) squares whose bases run from the curve y = tan x to the curve y = sec x.

7. The region in the first quadrant bounded above by the curve y = 2 line below by √ the
curve y = sec x tan x, and on the left by the y-axis, revolved about the line y = 2.
(Think about how to approach this problem.)

8. The region bounded by the parabola y = x2 and the line y = 2x in the first quadrant
revolves around the y-axis to generate a solid. Find the volume of the solid.

9. Find the volumes of the solids generated by revolving the regions bounded by the lines
and curves about the x-axis.

(a) y = sec x, y = 2, −π/4 ≤ x ≤ π/4
(b) y = sec x, y = tan x, x = 0, x = 1

10. Try to find the surface area of the solids mentioned in the above problems and discuss
among yourself about the correctness.
