TISSUES

The Living Fabric

Group 2
What are body tissues?

Body tissues are groups of similar cells that work

together to perform a specific function
in the body.
4 Types of Body Tissue

• Epithelial Tissue
• Connective Tissue
• Muscle Tissue
• Nervous Tissue
Connective
Tissue
What is Connective Tissue?

Tissue that supports, protects, and gives structure to other

tissues and organs in the body.
Common Characteristics of
Connective Tissue
•Connective tissues are characterized by an abundance of
intercellular matrix with relatively few cells.
•Connective tissue cells are able to reproduce but not as
rapidly as epithelial cells.
•Most connective tissues have a good blood supply but some
do not.
Structural Elements of
Connective tissue

• Cells
• Ground Substance
• Fibers
Cells
is the basic building block of all living things. It is the smallest
unit of life that can carry out all the functions necessary for an
organism to survive.
Ground Substances

The ground substance helps with the transport of nutrients

and waste between cells and also acts as a medium for
communication between cells.
Fibers

In the body, fibers are part of the extracellular matrix

and provide support and structure to tissues.
Types of Connective Tissue
• Muscle Tissue
• Nervous Tissue
• Covering And Lining Membrane
• Cutaneous Memberane
• Mucous Membrane
• Serous Membrane
Muscle Tissue
What is Muscle Tissue

It is composed of cells that have the special ability to shorten or contract

in order to produce movement of the body parts. The tissue is highly
cellular and is well supplied with blood vessels.
Types of Muscle Tissue
• Skeletal Tissue
• Cardiac Tissue
• Smooth Tissue
Skeletal Tissue

Are voluntary muscles, meaning you control how and when

they move and work. Nerves in your somatic nervous system
send signals to make them function.
Cardiac Tissue
Are only in your heart. It helps your heart pump blood throughout your
body, they're involuntary muscles that your autonomic nervous system
controls, that means they work without you having to think about it.
Smooth Tissue

makes up your organs, blood vessels, digestive tract, skin and

other areas. Smooth muscles are involuntary, too. So, your
autonomic nervous system controls them as well.
What is Nervous Tissue?

Nervous tissue is a type of tissue that makes up the brain,

spinal cord, and nerves, allowing the body to transmit signals
and control bodily functions. It consists of neurons, which send
messages, and glial cells, which support the neurons.
Covering and Lining Membrane

are tissues that cover and protect surfaces or line cavities in

the body.
Three types of Covering and
Lining Membrane

• Cutaneous Membrane
• Mucous Membrane
• Serous Membrane
Cutaneous Membrane
is commonly known as the skin. It is
the largest organ of the body and
serves as a protective barrier covering
the entire external surface.
Mucous Membrane
A mucous membrane is a type of tissue
that lines various cavities and organs in
the body. It secretes mucus, a thick fluid
that helps keep surfaces moist and
protects them from pathogens,
abrasions, and other irritants.
Serous Membrane
A serous membrane, or serosa, is
a thin layer of tissue that lines
certain cavities in the body and
covers the organs within these
cavities.
