A. Proposal for Afforestation Intervention for Niranjana River Rejuvenation
Project
1. Introduction
The Niranjana River Rejuvenation Project aims to restore the ecological health and
water quality of the Niranjana River through a series of targeted interventions,
including afforestation. This proposal outlines a strategic plan for afforestation to
enhance riverbank stability, improve biodiversity, and support sustainable water
management practices.
2. Objectives
 Stabilize Riverbanks: Prevent erosion and protect the riverbanks from
degradation.
 Enhance Biodiversity: Create habitats for wildlife and support ecosystem
diversity.
 Improve Water Quality: Reduce runoff and sedimentation, and improve the
natural filtration of water.
 Promote Climate Resilience: Increase carbon sequestration and contribute
to climate change mitigation.
 Ground Water Recharge: Groundwater recharge through afforestation is a
sustainable method to enhance the natural replenishment of groundwater
levels. This proposal outlines a strategy to use afforestation for groundwater
recharge as part of the Niranjana River Rejuvenation Project, focusing on
increasing infiltration, reducing runoff, and improving overall water availability
in the region.

3. Site Selection and Assessment

Some of the structures identified for water conservation & ground water recharge
from NARWA Mission, Chhattisgarh
The following structures have been identified for water conservation & ground water
recharge in the catchment area of river which are very helpful in rejuvenation of river
Niranjana (Falgu):
Contour Bunding or Contour Farming
Contour bunding or contour farming or contour ploughing is the farming practice of plowing
and/or planting across a slope following its elevation contour lines. These contour lines
create a water break which reduces the formation of rills and gullies during times of heavy
precipitation, allowing more time for the water to settle into the soil. In contour plowing, the
ruts made by the plow run perpendicular rather than parallel to the slopes, generally furrows
that curve around the land and are level. This method is also known for preventing tillage
erosion. Tillage erosion is the soil movement and erosion by tilling a given plot of land. A
similar practice is contour bunding where stones are placed around the contours of slopes.
Contour ploughing has been proved to reduce fertilizer loss, power and time consumption,
and wear on machines, as well as to increase crop yields and reduces soil erosion.
Soil erosion prevention practices such as this can drastically decrease negative effects
associated with soil erosion such as reduced crop productivity, worsened water quality,
lower effective reservoir water levels, flooding, and habitat destruction. Contour farming is
considered an active form of sustainable agriculture.
30 x 40 Model:
Recharge Pit:
A recharge pit allows the rainwater to replenish groundwater by recharging the underground
aquifers. It can be built to recharge a borewell or just to help the water infiltration in an area.
It can be circular, square or rectangular in shape.
Recharge pits are suitable for recharging very shallow aquifer. These are constructed
generally 1 to 3 m wide and 2 to 3 m deep. After excavation, the pits are refilled with pebbles
and boulders. Water to be recharged should be silt free. Cleaning of the pit should be done
periodically.

Earthen Gully Plug, Brushwood Dam, Loose Boulder Check Dam:

A check dam is a small, sometimes temporary, dam constructed across a swale, drainage
ditch, or waterway to counteract erosion by reducing water flow velocity. Check dams are
typically implemented in a system of several dams situated at regular intervals across the
area of interest.
A check dam placed in the ditch, swale, or channel interrupts the flow of water and flattens
the gradient of the channel, thereby reducing the velocity. In turn, this obstruction induces
infiltration and reduces eroding.

Under- ground Dyke:

A subsurface dyke is a structure that is built in an aquifer with the intention of obstructing the
natural flow of ground water, thereby raising the ground water level and increasing the
amount of water stored in the aquifer. Acting as an underground barrier impermeable to
water, it controls the groundwater flow in an aquifer and raises the water table.
Farm Pond:
C. Ponds/ water bodies details identified in the catchment area of river Niranjana
(Falgu):
Gokul Foundation with the consultation of local gram panchayats, forest department,
irrigation department and with all concerned departments have surveyed & identified 120
ponds for rejuvenation & conservation with their locations, area, capacity & present
situations.
Implementation through MNREGA and Convergence with Other Schemes

1. Mobilization of Resources
 Allocate funds from MNREGA for labor-intensive activities such as de-
siltation, excavation, and embankment strengthening.
 Converge with other schemes like the National Rural Drinking Water
Programme (NRDWP), Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana
(PMKSY), and state-level water conservation initiatives for additional
resources and technical support.
2. De-siltation and Excavation
 Begin the de-siltation process by removing accumulated silt and debris
to restore the original depth and capacity of the water body.
 Utilize manual labor under MNREGA to ensure employment generation
and community participation.
 Conduct the execution in three phases: the first phase will focus on
ponds with an area of less than 10,000 hectares; the second phase will
target ponds with an area between 10,000 and 30,000 hectares; and
the third phase will address ponds with an area greater than 30,000
hectares..
3. Strengthening and Repair
 Repair and strengthen embankments to prevent future siltation and
improve water retention.
 Construct inlet and outlet channels to regulate water flow and prevent
contamination.
4. Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration
 Introduce native vegetation around the water body to enhance
biodiversity and prevent soil erosion.
 Create habitats for aquatic and terrestrial wildlife to promote ecological
balance.
