Second Quarter – Module 5

Week 5)
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the

Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being
an active learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other
activities included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with
it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you
are not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do i

What’s the meaning?

Plants affect the lives of humans and other organisms. Plants are the primary
sources of their energy. There are two main groups of plants flowering and non-
flowering.
Flowering plants grow flowers and use seeds to reproduce, or make
more plants like them. Examples of flowering plants are corn, mongo bean, sunflower,
tulip, tomato, eggplant, mango, avocado and guava. The scientific name for flowering
plant is angiosperms. The major stages of its life cycle are seed, germination, growth,
pollination, fertilization and seed dispersal.
Non-flowering plants like mosses and ferns do not grow flowers. They reproduce
by spores instead of seeds. A spore contains reproductive cells enclosed in a thick case
and held together by a structure called sporangium. The stages in life cycle of fern
plants are: releasing of spore that will develop into gametophyte which produces sperm
and egg (gametes). These gametes fuse to form a zygote which develops into a new
sporophyte and later grows into mature sporophyte.

What will I do?
“Watch me Grow”
I. Problem: What are the factors related to seed germination?
II. Science Skills: Observing, Analyzing, Interpreting
III. Materials Needed: 10 mongo and corn seeds, garden soil, two pots , water,
IV. Procedure:
1. Soak the corn seeds overnight and 2 to 3 hours for mongo seeds before sowing.
2. Remove the seeds that float and drain the remaining seeds in the morning and give
them a fresh rinse in water. Pick 10 mongo and corn seeds.
3.Put garden soil to the two pots at least ¾ of it. Label it with the name of the seeds.
4.Sow the seeds at least half inch depth and cover with a light amount of soil.
5.Put the pots in a safe place and can receive enough sunlight.
6. Water them every day, give only enough water to moisten the soil. Don’t overwater to
avoid rotting of the seeds.
7. Observe the seeds in the two pots every day.
QUESTIONS:
1. What happened to the seeds? _______________________
2. Which seeds germinate first? ________________________
3. What are the factors that affect the growth of the seeds? ____________________________

Using the table below, record what you have observed in the daily growth of the
seeds.

What’s the meaning?

The life a plant starts from a seed. The seed is protected by an outer covering.
This outer covering is called seed coat. The seed coat contains a small baby plant. This
baby plant is called the embryo.
The cotyledons are the seed leaves that store food. The largest part of the seed
around embryo is called endosperm. There are two types of seeds: monocot and dicot.
Monocots are seeds with one cotyledon. Corn, rice, and grass are monocots. Dicots are
seeds with two cotyledons. Mongo, tomato, and squash are dicots.
Germination is the process in which the embryo gets energy from stored food in
the seed. The embryo starts to grow.
The factors that affect germination are water, warmth, soil, sunlight, air, and
good quality of seed. Once the germination requirements have been met, these
embryonic plants begin to grow.

Questions:
1. In the first video, what are the factors needed in seed germination?
2. In the second video, how will you describe the growth of the corn and bean seeds?

What did I get?

• The three primary parts of a seed are the embryo, endosperm, and seed
coat.
• Germination is the process in which the embryo or “baby plant” gets
energy from the stored food in the seed and starts to grow. The factors that
affect germination are water, warmth, soil, sunlight, air and good quality
of seed.
• The steps in the germination process are water absorption, enlargement of
embryo, radicle emergence, plant emergence, leaf formation, and
photosynthesis.

What can I show?

The COVID -19 pandemic affects almost the livelihood of people. We can feel how
high the prices of food commodities in the market. Fruits and vegetables become very
costly day by day. Based on your learning in plant reproduction, how can you help your
family to lessen your food expenses?
