Question (1)
A heat engine is supplied with 278 kJ/s of heat at a constant fixed temperature of 283°C and the heat
rejection takes place at 5°C. The following results were reported:
(a) 208 kJ/s are rejected, (b) 139 kJ/s are rejected, (c) 70 kJ/s are rejected. Classify which of the results
report a reversible cycle or irreversible cycle or impossible results
Question (2)
A refrigeration cycle having a coefficient of performance of 3 maintains a computer laboratory at 18oC on
a day when the outside temperature is 30oC. The thermal load at steady state consists of energy entering
through the walls and windows at a rate of 30,000 kJ/h and from the occupants, computers, and lighting at
a rate of 6000 kJ/h. Determine the power required by this cycle and compare with the minimum theoretical
power required for any refrigeration
Question (3)
A reversible heat engine operates between two reservoirs at temperatures of 600°C and 40°C. The engine
drives a reversible refrigerator which operates between reservoirs at temperatures of 40°C and – 20°C. The
heat transfer to the heat engine is 2000 kJ and the network output for the combined engine refrigerator is
360 kJ. (a) Calculate the heat transfer to the refrigerant and the net heat transfer to the reservoir at 40°C.
(b) Reconsider (a) given that the efficiency of the heat engine and the C.O.P. of the refrigerator are each 40
percent of their maximum possible values
Question (4)
A heat pump operating at steady state is driven by a 1-kW electric motor and provides heating for a building
whose interior is to be kept at 20 oC. On a day when the outside temperature is 0 oC and energy is lost through
the walls and roof at a rate of 60,000 kJ/h, would the heat pump suffice?
Question (5)
A heat pump working on a reversed Carnot cycle takes in energy from a reservoir maintained at 278 K and
delivers it to another reservoir where temperature is 350 K. The heat pump derives power for its operation from
a reversible engine operating within the higher and lower temperatures of 1350 K and 350 K. For 100 kJ/kg of
energy supplied to reservoir at 350 K, estimate the energy taken from the reservoir at 1350 K.
Question (6)
Two reversible power cycles are arranged in series. The first cycle receives energy by heat transfer from a
reservoir at temperature TH and rejects energy to a reservoir at an intermediate temperature T. The second
cycle receives the energy rejected by the first cycle from the reservoir at temperature T and rejects energy
to a reservoir at temperature Tl lower than T. Derive an expression for the intermediate temperature T in
terms of TH and Tl when (a) both engines develop equal power. (b) the thermal efficiencies of the two power
cycles are equal (c) if the source and sink temperatures of 550 K and 350 K., determine the intermediate
temperature for a and b
Question (7)
An air-conditioner with refrigerant-134a as the working fluid is used to keep a room at 25 oC by rejecting
the waste heat to the outdoor air at 35 oC. The room gains heat through the walls and the windows at a rate
of 200 kJ/min while the heat generated by the computer, TV, and lights amounts to 800 W. The refrigerant
enters the compressor at 425 kPa as a saturated vapor at a rate of 80 L/min and leaves at 1000 kPa and 75

C. Determine (a) the actual COP, (b) the maximum COP, and (c) the minimum volume flow rate of the
refrigerant at the compressor inlet for the same compressor inlet and exit conditions
