b. a + 2b - c at a = 3, b = 2 and c = -1
2. Recall the steps in transforming general form to vertex form of a quadratic function.

FIRM-UP
3. Discuss the procedures in graphing quadratic functions in general form. Let the students
identify the vertex (maximum or minimum value) x- and y-intercepts, axis of symmetry,
domain and range.
4. Directions: Graph the following functions. Identify the vertex (maximum or minimum value) x-
and y-intercepts, axis of symmetry, domain and range.
a. y = x2 - 2x + 1
b. y = 2x2 + 5x - 3

DEEPEN
5. Give 2 equations of a quadratic function in general form with c ≠ 0 and ±1.
6. Graph the given functions. Identify the vertex (maximum or minimum value) x- and y-
intercepts, axis of symmetry, domain and range.
7. Group Activity
8. Discuss how to solve for the zeroes of a quadratic function.
9. (Think-Pair-Share)
a. Given the function f(x) = 25x2 - 9, can we use both methods (extracting the square root
and factoring) to find its zeroes? Why?
b. Given the function h(x) = x2 - x - 6, can we use both methods (extracting the square root
and factoring) to find its zeroes? Why?
c. If y = ax2 + bx + c is non-factorable, what method/s are you going to use? Why?
d. Find the roots of y = x2 - 6x + 7 and f(x) = 3x 2 - 5x - 7 by completing the square and
quadratic formula. Compare your answers.

EXPLORE
10. Directions: Solve the discriminant of the following quadratic functions. (D = b2 - 4ac)
a. f(x) = x2 - 5x - 6
b. g(x) = x2 - 6x + 9
c. h(x) = x2 + 4x + 6
11. Recall the steps in graphing the general form of quadratic functions.

FIRM-UP
12. (Group Activity)
Use the functions presented in the drill. Let each group to graph the functions and identify
the x-intercepts as seen on the graph.

DEEPEN
13. Presentation/Discussion
a. Charting and Analysis
Quadratic Functions Discriminant x-intercepts/zeroes

g(x) = x2 - 6x + 9 0 3

h(x) = x2 + 4x + 6 -8 none

Let the students relate the discriminant to the x-intercepts of the graph and to the graph
itself.
