Napier Grass Project

Napier Grass (Pennisetum purpureum), or Elephant Grass, is a fast-growing, drought-resistant fodder crop ideal for tropical climates. It can yield up to 100-150 tons of green fodder per hectare annually, providing a rich protein source for livestock. The deep roots help prevent soil erosion and improve soil fertility, supporting sustainable agriculture. The project aims to increase fodder availability, promote environmentally friendly farming, and enhance livestock productivity. Napier Grass can

NAPIER GRASS PROJECT

FINANCIAL CALCULATION: GROWING NAPIER GRASS
Total Investment for 5 Years

1. Land Cost: (15000*5) =75,000 INR (On 5-year lease)

2. Seed Cost: 4,000 INR * 5=20,000 INR
3. Annual Costs:

• Fertilizers: 8,000 INR/year

• Irrigation Water: 8,000 INR/year
• Labor Cost: 20,000 INR/year
• Total Annual Cost: 8,000 + 8,000 + 20,000 = 36,000 INR/year
• Total Annual Cost for 5 Years: 36,000 INR * 5 = 180,000 INR

TOTAL COST FOR 5 YEARS= 75000+20000+180000=2,75,000

Yield Calculation

1. Average Yield per Acre per Year: (180 + 200) / 2 = 190 ton

2. Total Yield for 100 Acres per Year: 190 ton/acre * 100 acres = 1,90,00 ton/year

Total Yield Over 5 Years

1. Total Yield for 5 Years: 19000 tons/year * 5 = 9,50,000 tons

Cost Per 100 Acres Over 5 YEARS

1. Total Investment for 5 Years: 2,75,00,000 INR

Summary

Parameter Value
Land Cost (5 Years) 75,000 INR
Seed Cost (5 years) 20,000 INR
Annual Costs (Fertilizer+irrigation+Labour) (5 years) 1,80,000 INR
TOTAL INVESTMENT /ACRE/ 5 YEARS 2,75,000 INR
Average Yield per Acre 190 ton/year
Total Yield (100 acres/year) 1,90,000 ton/year
Total Yield (5 years) 9,50,000 tons
Cost per 100 Acres (5 years) 2,75,00,000 INR
Output and Cost Summary

• Output per 100 Acres (5 years): 9,50,000 tons

• Total Investment (5 years): 2,75,00,000 INR

➢ TOTAL INVESMENT /ACRE/5 YEAR= 275000 INR

➢ TOTAL INVESMENT /ACRE/YEAR= 55,000 INR

Total land required for 100 ton per day Napier Grass= 275 acre
So Total investment /acre/year= (275* 55000) = 1,51,25,000 INR
NAPIER GRASS CULTIVATION GUIDE

YIELDS AND GROWTH

➢ Yields: 180 to 200 tonnes per acre per annum, producing high yields in a short period of time.
➢ Harvesting: Very high yields on low ground, with crop harvesting occurring 8 times a year.
➢ Height: Grows up to a height of 400 - 500 cm.
➢ Leaves: The leaves, which are 6 - 8 cm broad, are the longest among similar types, and each pitch
has 400 to 450 high crisp leaves.
➢ Leaf-Stem Ratio: High leaf-stem ratio.
➢ Durability: Durable, with 25 - 30 punches, and tilted.
➢ Root Growth: Roots around the nodes can quickly grow.

CULTIVATION AND SUITABILITY

➢ Age: 8 years.
➢ Bearing Capacity: Resistant to pests and diseases.
➢ Adaptability: Cultivation can be done in all parts of India and in any kind of climate.
➢ Water Tolerance: It grows in all kinds of water, including saline water, without yield reduction

SEASONALITY
➢ Season: Suitable for cultivation throughout the year.

SOIL TYPE
➢ Versatility: It grows in all kinds of soil. Notably, the yield is not reduced when crops are cultivated
on beach sand, although the protein content may decrease.

LAND PREPARATION
➢ Ploughing: Using an iron plough, plough the land to a depth of two to five feet or about 15 to 30
cm.
➢ Depth: The depth of ploughing is greater when done by bull compared to a tractor.

NUTRITIONAL METHOD
Fertilizer Application:
➢ Before the last ploughing, apply 10 tons of fertilizer per acre.
➢ Apply 60 kg of nitrogen (130 kg urea), 20 kg of phosphate (125 kg super phosphate), and 16 kg of
ash (27 kg potassium). Full-sized bell and ash, as well as 50 percent of nitrogen, should be applied
as base manure.
➢ Apply the remaining 50 percent of nitrogen on the 30th day of planting.
➢ After each harvest, apply 30 kg of nitrogen (65 kg urea) for higher yield.
➢ Azospirillum and phosphonates (800g per acre) or azophos (1600g) mixed with 75% of
recommended nitrogen and phosphorus increase yield and reduce fertilizer usage by 25%.

NUMBER OF STEMS
➢ Stems Required: 10,000 to 12,000 stems per acre.

PLANTING METHOD
➢ Soil Preparation: Loosen the soil by watering before planting.
➢ Planting: Plant the stems in rows with 60 cm intervals. After planting, tighten the soil around the
stems to ensure positive germination.
WEED MANAGEMENT
➢ First Weed Removal: Remove weeds 30 days after planting.
➢ Second Weed Removal: If necessary, remove weeds again within 45 days.
➢ Post-Weed Removal: After the initial weeding phases, Super Napier grass grows very fast and
densely, which inhibits further weed growth. After 80 days and the first harvest, weed removal
might be necessary but is generally not needed afterward.

IRRIGATION
➢ Initial Watering: Water the plants on the third day after planting.
➢ Regular Irrigation: Irrigate once every 8 to 10 days, depending on soil conditions and rainfall.
Wastewater can also be used for irrigation.
➢ Water Tolerance: Super Napier grows well in all types of water, including saline water, without
significant yield reduction.

SOIL ENRICHMENT
➢ Post-Weeding Nutrients: After the first (30 days) or second (45 days) weeding, enrich the soil with
sufficient nutrients.
➢ Regular Soil Enrichment: Enrich the soil every 150 days to maintain high crop yield.

DISEASE CONTROL
➢ Natural Pesticides: Use natural pesticides and avoid chemical mixtures from stores to prevent
poisoning livestock.
➢ Growth Stimulants: Apply natural pest control and nutrients through the leaves 15 days before
harvest to avoid affecting the fodder's palatability for livestock.

HARVESTING
➢ First Harvest: The first harvest can be done within 75 to 80 days from planting, depending on soil,
water, and agricultural methods.
➢ Subsequent Harvests: Harvest the crop every 45 days, with 8 harvests per annum.
➢ Harvest Technique: Remove the fodder at ground level. Reduce the crop radius every two to three
years to maintain a bar size of 3 x 2 feet.
