General form of a linear equation in two variables
The general form of a linear equation in two variables is
•ax + by + c = 0
Here: a, b & c are constants, x, y are variables
and a ≠ 0, b ≠ 0

Examples:
5y + 6 =7x
3x + 2y = 12
General form: 7x –5y –6 = 0
General form: 3x + 2y –12 = 0
Where a = 7, b = –5, c = –6
Where a = 3, b = 12, c = –12
Mathematics/IX Linear equations in two variables 4
Solved Examples:
Express the following in the form of ax + by + c = 0 and indicate the
values of a, b and c.

Example 1. 3x + 6 = 5y

Solution:
3x + 6 = 5y can be written as 3x – 5y + 6 = 0
∴ a = 3, b = –5, c = 6
Example 2. x = 7
Solution:
x = 7 can be written as 1.x + 0.y = 7 or 1.x + 0.y – 7 = 0
∴ a = 1, b = 0, c = – 7
