The Legend of Biwar

(A Legend from Papua)

There was a village in Mimika, on Papua Island long ago. The villagers were hard at
work findings sago, the staple food of Papuan indigenous inhabitants. Twelve boats were
made ready for sea travel. Their boots were loaded with sago. After a few days on the sea, a
huge dragon appeared while they were sailing back to their village. With its tail, the dragon
assaulted them. Most of the boatmen were drowning. The only survivor was a woman who
remained on her boat until she reached land.
The woman was pregnant but she had lost her husband when the dragon attacked. She was
unable to return to her village because her boat was broken as well. A few months later, a son
was born and was named Biwar.
Biwar grew up into a good-looking, strong and healthy man. One day, his mother told
Biwar about the dragon that had attacked them a long time ago. Biwar swore to defeat the
dragon that caused his father’s death. He built a sizable ship and numerous weaponries.
Biwar and his men, then sailed on the ship to the sea. A large wave suddenly appeared as they
were sailing. The dragon appeared. Biwar and his men fought the dragon fiercely. On one
occasion, Biwar managed to shot his arrow at the dragon. He finally defeated the dragon. The
locals welcomed Biwar as a hero in the village. Feeling happy, they expressed their gratitude
to Biwar. From then on, the locals subsequently lost their fear of sea travel.
Legenda Biwar
Penduduk desa bekerja
keras mencari sagu, makanan pokok penduduk asli Papua. Dua belas perahu disiapkan untuk
perjalanan laut. Sepatu bot mereka penuh dengan sagu. Setelah beberapa hari di laut, seekor
naga besar muncul ketika mereka berlayar kembali ke desa mereka. Dengan ekornya, naga itu
menyerang mereka.

because along of his trip, he found some predators that wanted to eat him.He was safe and could run
and hide at a high tree. In the night, he was lonely and he cried along the time. The cry made some
birds felt pity of him.
In the morning, there was a bird that told him about his parents. The bird had seen his parent
after traveling from the west side of the jungle. The bird said that his parents were caught by some
humans and brought them at a house.

the place where his parents were.In his mind, he thought that all human was cruel and bad. He was
afraid that the human would kill his parents. After long time walking, finally the baby orangutan came

quickly to his parents. They were so happy because they could finally meet again. The parents told the
baby that the place was a home for all orangutans that had no home after the forest was torn down.
They asked the baby whether he liked to stay there. He quickly agreed.
The sanctuary staff later found the family in a corner and put the baby into the rescue program.
It made the baby orangutan believe again that there was still humanity in a human.
