1. A solid steel shaft transmits 30 hp while running at 110 rev/min. Find the smallest safe
diameter of the shaft in inches if the shear stress is limited to 5000 psi and the angle of
twist of the shaft is not to exceed 7-in a length of 10 ft. Use G 1. 12 x 10 psi for steel.
2. A hollow 3-m-long steel shaft must transmit a torque of 25 kN. m. The total angle of twist
in this length is not to exceed 2.5° and the allowable shearing stress is 95 MPa.
Determine the inside and outside diameters of the shaft in millimeters 2. if G = 85 x 10°
Pa. The maximum shearing stress occurs at the outer fibers at Do/2.
3. The propellers of a ship are connected to an A-36 steel shaft that is 60 m long and has
an outer diameter of 340 mm and inner diameter of 260 mm. If the power output is 4.5
MW when the shaft rotates at 20 rad>s, determine the maximum 3. torsional stress in
the shaft and its angle of twist.
4. A steel tube having an outer diameter of 2.5 in. is used to transmit 9 hp when turning at
27 rev/min. Determine the inner 4. diameter d of the tube to the nearest 1/8 in. if the
allowable shear stress is allow = 10 ksi.
5. A compound shaft consisting of a steel segment and an aluminum segment is acted
upon by two torques as shown in figure. Determine the maximum permissible value of T
subject to the following conditions: 83 MPa, = 55 MPa, ■st · 5. and the angle of rotation
of the free end is limited to 6°. For steel, G = 83 GPa and for aluminum, G = 28 GPa.
