UNIT-II
PROJECTION OF SOLIDS
1. Classify solids.
Polyhedra
Solids of revolution
Frustum and truncated solids
2. What is the minimum no. of views required to represent solid in orthographic projections?
Two views are required
3. Define polyhedron.
A solid which is bounded by plane surfaces. It can be sub divided in to three types:
Regular polyhedra
Prisms
Pyramids
4. What do you meant by solids of revolution?
If a plane surface is revolved about one of its edges, the solid generated is called solids
of revolution. Examples:- cylinders, cones, spheres etc..
5. What is a regular polyhedron?
A polyhedron is a many sided solid figure bounded by only plane surfaces or faces. If all
the faces of the polyhedron have the same size and shape, it is termed as a regular
polyhedron.
6. Differentiate frustum and truncated solids.
Frustum:-
When a pyramid or a cone is cut by a cutting plane parallel to its base, remove
the top portion. The remaining portion thus obtained is called the frustum.
Truncated solids:-
When a solid is cut by a cutting plane inclined to its base, remove the top
portion. The remaining portion thus obtained is called as truncated solids.
7. Define prism and pyramid.
Prism:- It is a polyhedron having two equal regular polygons parallel to each other
connected by rectangular planes.
Pyramids:- It is a polyhedron consisting of a plane figure as its base and a number of
lateral faces of triangular shape.
8. What is the difference between right and oblique solids?
In a right solid, the axis is perpendicular to its base. In an oblique solid the axis is inclined
to its base.
9. Define the following terms: 1.Tetrahedron 2.Octahedron.
Tetrahedron:- It is a solid having four faces of equal equilateral triangles.
Octahedron:- It is a regular polyhedron bounded by eight equal equilateral triangles.
10. Identify the number of corners, triangular faces and edges in a tetrahedron.
Number of corners- 4
Number of triangular faces- 4
Number of edges- 6
11. Differentiate square prism and hexahedron(cube)
Square prism is having two square bases and it is joined by four rectangular surfaces.
Hexahedron is having 6 square surfaces with same base measurements
12. If a cone is lying on its generator on HP, with the axis parallel to VP, what will be the shape of
the top view of the base?
Ellipse
13. Name the solids having one polygonal face and four triangular faces
Square pyramid and rectangular pyramid
14. Define generator
A Generator is an imaginary line drawn along the surface of a curved solid which if
rotated around the axis of the solid follows the path of the curved surface
15. What initial position has to be chosen if a solid has to rest on an edge of base?
In the initial position, one of the base edges should be kept perpendicular to VP
16. State the top and front views of a vertical cylinder of 55 mm diameter and 65 mm altitude
Top view is a circle of 55 mm diameter. The front view is a rectangle of width 55 mm
and height 65 mm.
