THESIS-PROPOSAL-Native Chicken
Native chicken rearing is a significant agricultural practice in Dinalungan, Aurora. This study
aims to explore the traditional methods, benefits, and challenges faced by local farmers in
rearing native chickens. Understanding these aspects is essential for improving productivity and
sustainability in the region.
Dinalungan is located in the province of Aurora, which is characterized by its coastal and
mountainous terrain. The municipality's economy is primarily agrarian, with agriculture and
fishing as the main sources of livelihood. The population includes a mix of indigenous
communities and settlers who rely heavily on subsistence farming
1.Economic Viability- Assessing the economic feasibility of native chicken rearing as a livelihood
option for local farmers in terms of income generation, cost-benefit analysis, and market
potential for native chicken products.
4.Food Security and Nutrition- Evaluating the contribution of native chicken rearing to food
security and nutritional status in the community, particularly in terms of access to protein-rich
food sources.
5.Livelihood Diversification- Exploring how native chicken rearing can contribute to diversifying
livelihoods, reducing dependency on single income sources, and enhancing resilience to
economic shocks.
2.Food Security- By diversifying food sources and increasing local production of protein-rich native
chicken meat and eggs, the study contributes to enhancing food security within the community,
particularly in rural areas where access to nutritious food may be limited.
3.Cultural Preservation- Native chicken rearing is often deeply ingrained in the cultural heritage of
communities. The study aids in preserving and promoting traditional farming practices and indigenous
chicken breeds, thereby safeguarding cultural identity and knowledge passed down through
generations.
4.Environmental Conservation- By promoting native chicken breeds, which are typically better adapted
to local environmental conditions, the study supports biodiversity conservation efforts and promotes
sustainable farming practices that rely less on external inputs.
2.Socio-Cultural Impact- Investigating the socio-cultural significance of native chicken rearing practices
within the community.
5.Policy Implications- Providing recommendations for policy interventions and support mechanisms to
promote native chicken rearing as a viable livelihood option.
This study was conducted at Alfonso Sales in Brgy, Peleg, Dinalungan Aurora, from June, 06,
2026.
Review of literature
2.Farming Practices- Review literature on traditional and modern farming techniques used in
native chicken rearing, including housing systems, feeding practices, health management, and
breeding strategies specific to Dinalungan.
3.Challenges and Constraints- Examine research highlighting challenges faced by native chicken
farmers in Dinalungan, such as low productivity, disease prevalence, market access limitations,
and environmental factors.
4.Market Dynamics- Investigate studies discussing market opportunities for native chicken
products in Dinalungan, including demand trends, pricing mechanisms, value-added products,
and marketing strategies.
5.Government Support and Policies- Look into government policies, programs, and
interventions aimed at promoting native chicken farming in Dinalungan, including subsidies,
training initiatives, infrastructure development, and regulatory frameworks.
Conceptual Framework
1.Identification of Key Variables- Define key variables influencing native chicken rearing in
Dinalungan, such as breed characteristics, farming practices, market dynamics, government
support, and community engagement.
4.Integration of Literature- Integrate findings from the review of literature into the conceptual
framework, ensuring that key insights and empirical evidence inform the conceptualization of
relationships and variables.
5.Validation and Refinement- Validate the conceptual framework through stakeholder
consultations, expert feedback, and empirical testing if possible, refining it based on insights
gained from these processes to ensure its relevance and applicability to the context of native
chicken rearing in Dinalungan.
Methodology
Research Design
This study will utilize a descriptive research design to gather detailed information on the
practices, challenges, and outcomes of native chicken rearing in Dinalungan. Both qualitative
and quantitative data will be collected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic.
-Brooding- The period when newly hatched chicks are kept warm and fed properly until they
are able to regulate their body temperature.
-Flock Management- The overall handling and care of a group of chickens, including feeding,
health monitoring, and housing.
-Free-Range- A method of farming where chickens are allowed to roam freely in an open area
rather than being confined to cages.
Research Instruments
-Questionnaire- A structured questionnaire will be developed to collect quantitative data on the
demographics of farmers, rearing practices, challenges, and productivity outcomes. The
questionnaire will include both closed and open-ended questions.
-Interview Guide- An interview guide will be used to conduct in-depth interviews with a subset
of 10 farmers to gather qualitative data on their experiences, challenges, and insights into
native chicken rearing.
-Observation Checklist- An observation checklist will be used to record the physical conditions
of chicken coops, feeding practices, and overall health of the chickens during field visits.
2. Data Collection- Distribute questionnaires to the selected sample of 50 farmers and collect
responses.
- Conduct face-to-face interviews with the 10 farmers selected for in-depth interviews.
3.Data Management- Compile and organize data from questionnaires, interviews, and
observations for analysis.
Qualitative Data Analysis- Employ thematic analysis to identify common themes and patterns in
the interview transcripts and observation notes. Coding will be done to categorize responses
and identify significant insights.
