Background of the Study

Introducing native chicken rearing in Dinalungan is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it can
enhance food security by providing a sustainable source of protein for the community.
Secondly, it can contribute to the local economy by creating opportunities for small-scale
poultry farming and selling poultry products locally. Additionally, native chicken rearing
promotes biodiversity conservation by preserving indigenous chicken breeds. Lastly, it can
empower local farmers by offering an alternative livelihood and reducing dependency on
external sources for poultry products.

Native chicken rearing is a significant agricultural practice in Dinalungan, Aurora. This study
aims to explore the traditional methods, benefits, and challenges faced by local farmers in
rearing native chickens. Understanding these aspects is essential for improving productivity and
sustainability in the region.

Dinalungan is located in the province of Aurora, which is characterized by its coastal and
mountainous terrain. The municipality's economy is primarily agrarian, with agriculture and
fishing as the main sources of livelihood. The population includes a mix of indigenous
communities and settlers who rely heavily on subsistence farming

Native chicken rearing is often more environmentally sustainable compared to industrial

poultry farming. These chickens can be raised with minimal environmental impact, utilizing
local resources and contributing to the biodiversity of farming systems. Promoting sustainable
practices in native chicken rearing can align with broader goals of environmental conservation
and climate resilience in the region.
Objectives of the Study
By addressing these objectives, the study aims to provide insights and recommendations for the
successful implementation and promotion of native chicken rearing as a sustainable and
beneficial practice in Dinalungan.

1.Economic Viability- Assessing the economic feasibility of native chicken rearing as a livelihood
option for local farmers in terms of income generation, cost-benefit analysis, and market
potential for native chicken products.

2.Socio-Cultural Impact- Investigating the socio-cultural significance of native chicken rearing in

Dinalungan, including its role in traditional practices, cultural heritage, and community
cohesion.

3.Environmental Sustainability- Examining the environmental implications of native chicken

farming practices, such as land use, waste management, and conservation of indigenous
chicken breeds.

4.Food Security and Nutrition- Evaluating the contribution of native chicken rearing to food
security and nutritional status in the community, particularly in terms of access to protein-rich
food sources.

5.Livelihood Diversification- Exploring how native chicken rearing can contribute to diversifying
livelihoods, reducing dependency on single income sources, and enhancing resilience to
economic shocks.

Significance of the Study

1.Livelihood Improvement- It offers an opportunity to improve the livelihoods of local farmers by
introducing a sustainable and potentially lucrative enterprise that aligns with the cultural and
environmental context of Dinalungan.

2.Food Security- By diversifying food sources and increasing local production of protein-rich native
chicken meat and eggs, the study contributes to enhancing food security within the community,
particularly in rural areas where access to nutritious food may be limited.

3.Cultural Preservation- Native chicken rearing is often deeply ingrained in the cultural heritage of
communities. The study aids in preserving and promoting traditional farming practices and indigenous
chicken breeds, thereby safeguarding cultural identity and knowledge passed down through
generations.

4.Environmental Conservation- By promoting native chicken breeds, which are typically better adapted
to local environmental conditions, the study supports biodiversity conservation efforts and promotes
sustainable farming practices that rely less on external inputs.

5.Community Empowerment- Through capacity-building, training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives

associated with native chicken rearing, the study empowers local farmers and community members to
take control of their economic activities, fostering self-reliance and resilience.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

1.Economic Analysis- Assessing the profitability and market potential of native chicken rearing in
Dinalungan.

2.Socio-Cultural Impact- Investigating the socio-cultural significance of native chicken rearing practices
within the community.

3.Environmental Assessment- Examining the environmental implications and sustainability of native

chicken farming practices.
4.Food Security Evaluation- Evaluating the contribution of native chicken rearing to food security and
nutritional status in the community.

5.Policy Implications- Providing recommendations for policy interventions and support mechanisms to
promote native chicken rearing as a viable livelihood option.

Time and place of the study

This study was conducted at Alfonso Sales in Brgy, Peleg, Dinalungan Aurora, from June, 06,
2026.

Methodology

Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted in Dinalungan, a municipality in the province of Aurora, Philippines.
The area is characterized by its rural setting, which provides an ideal environment for
traditional agricultural practices, including native chicken rearing.

Research Design
This study will utilize a descriptive research design to gather detailed information on the
practices, challenges, and outcomes of native chicken rearing in Dinalungan. Both qualitative
and quantitative data will be collected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

Operational Definition of Terms

-Native Chicken Rearing- The practice of raising indigenous breeds of chickens using traditional
methods and local resources.

-Brooding- The period when newly hatched chicks are kept warm and fed properly until they
are able to regulate their body temperature.

-Flock Management- The overall handling and care of a group of chickens, including feeding,
health monitoring, and housing.
-Free-Range- A method of farming where chickens are allowed to roam freely in an open area
rather than being confined to cages.

Population and Sample

The population for this study will consist of native chicken farmers in Dinalungan. A purposive
sampling technique will be used to select a sample of 48 farmers who are actively engaged in
native chicken rearing. This sample size is considered sufficient to represent the diversity of
practices and experiences in the community.

Research Instruments
-Questionnaire- A structured questionnaire will be developed to collect quantitative data on the
demographics of farmers, rearing practices, challenges, and productivity outcomes. The
questionnaire will include both closed and open-ended questions.

-Interview Guide- An interview guide will be used to conduct in-depth interviews with a subset
of 10 farmers to gather qualitative data on their experiences, challenges, and insights into
native chicken rearing.

-Observation Checklist- An observation checklist will be used to record the physical conditions
of chicken coops, feeding practices, and overall health of the chickens during field visits.

Data Gathering Procedures

1.Preparation- Obtain necessary permissions from local authorities and community leaders.
Pre-test the questionnaire and interview guide with a small group of farmers to refine the
instruments.

2. Data Collection- Distribute questionnaires to the selected sample of 50 farmers and collect
responses.
- Conduct face-to-face interviews with the 10 farmers selected for in-depth interviews.

- Visit farms to conduct observations and complete the observation checklist.

3.Data Management- Compile and organize data from questionnaires, interviews, and
observations for analysis.

Data Analysis and Interpretation

Quantitative Data Analysis- Use statistical tools to analyze data from the questionnaires.
Descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, frequency, and percentage) will be used to
summarize the data. Inferential statistics may be applied to determine correlations between
variables (e.g., rearing practices and productivity outcomes).

Qualitative Data Analysis- Employ thematic analysis to identify common themes and patterns in
the interview transcripts and observation notes. Coding will be done to categorize responses
and identify significant insights.

Interpretatio- Integrate quantitative and qualitative findings to provide a holistic understanding

of native chicken rearing practices in Dinalungan. Discuss the implications of the findings in
relation to existing literature and suggest recommendations for improving native chicken
rearing practices in the region.
