Communication and

Globalization
Janice F. Sabado
As technology advances, the world is getting smaller. Today we are able to communicate with people across
the globe at the touch of a button. While globalization, or communication between nations beyond their borders,
is an old concept, with the onset of new technology globalization is affecting the ways we communicate and learn
in fascinating ways. We are expanding our understanding of fellowship and as we become more connected, we are
deepening our educational experiences.
The rise in the use of the internet in
particular has been incredibly instrumental
in improving the ways in which we connect
with one another.
Because of technologies like the
internet, we have the opportunity to view
diverse perspectives that overlooks outside
of our scope before. We are able to fully
connect with someone who is thousands of
miles away in real time and the effects are
profound.
PRIMARY GOALS
• Define Communication and
Globalization
• What is Communication in Relation to
Globalization?
• Impacts of Globalization on
Communication Skills Development
• The Effects of Globalization on Global
Communication
I. Define Communication and
Globalization

GLOBALIZATION
is the process of interaction and integration
between people, business entities,
governments, and cultures from other nations,
driven by international trade and investment
and supported by information technology
(Levin Institute, 2017).

• Globalization has been regarded as the key to

the worldwide integration of humanity, where
there is an increased economic, political, and
cultural integration and interdependence of
diverse cultures.
I. Define Communication and
Globalization
• Globalization implies the opening of local and
nationalistic perspectives to a broader outlook
of an interconnected and interdependent world
with free transfer of capital, goods, and services
across national frontiers.

• Globalization has widely increased the

availability of information for people across the
world. By the use of internet and advanced
mobile services, people are able to discuss
business plans and proposals on an
international level as well as exchange private
data securely.
I. Define Communication and
Globalization
• COMMUNICATION has a symbolic nature and is an act
of sharing one’s ideas, emotions, attitudes, or
perceptions with another person or group of persons
through words (written or spoken), gestures, signals,
signs, or other modes of transmitting images.

• GLOBAL COMMUNICATION have also contributed to

the enlightenment and development of the globalization
process in a number of states.

✔ To communicate effectively, one should develop

not only skills, but also a sense of empathy with
others.
I. Define Communication and
Globalization

Globalization and global communication have

made it easier to see people on the other side of
the world as a neighbor, instead of a stranger from
a faraway land. There is so much knowledge about
other countries and cultures available online that
it‘s no longer a complete mystery.
II. WHAT IS COMIMUNICATION IN
RELATION TO GLOBALIZATION?

Communication is the lifeblood of any organization,

and globalization poses new challenges to
communication in any organization. One immediate
effect is the increase in intercultural communication.

Communication in the 21st century is increasingly

transnational and intercultural. Consequently,
effective global communication proves to be a
challenge to many people since cultural diversity
increases the possibility of miscommunication.
II. WHAT IS COMIMUNICATION IN RELATION TO
GLOBALIZATION?

• Another important consequence of

globalization is the rise of World
Englishers where each country
boasts of its own variety of English.
Experts claim that the Englishers are
different in relation to word use,
pronunciation, accent, and grammar.

• As such, the challenges to

intercultural communication do not
only include problems in slang or idiomatic expressions which non-native speakers usually find
problematic, but also grammatical and pronunciation variations and other verbal as well as
non-verbal facets of language.
III. IMPACTS OF GLOBALIZATION ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

1.Virtual Interaction 3.Cultural Awareness in Body Language

2.Cultural Awareness in Speech 4.Time Differences
1) VIRTUAL INTERACTION
Globalzation has introduced virtual
communication and collaboration as a major part
of workplace dynamics. Modern entrepreneurs
need to understand the strengths and limitations
of different communications media, and how to
use each medium to maximum effect.
1) VIRTUAL INTERACTION
For example, communicating via email to
distant team members requires a certain
etiquette and nuance not necessarily required in
face-to-face interactions. Holding virtual
meetings requires a similar change in approach,
and people who are unaccustomed to
communicating in groups in virtual settings can
find themselves lost, confused or unable to share
their input.
2) CULTURAL AWARENESS IN SPEECH
The need for cultural awareness is a major impact of globalization on the required skill set of effective
communicators, resulting in the evolution of communication skills development programs. Modern
entrepreneurs and employees need the ability to catch subtle nuances of people's manner of speech when
communicating across cultures. Even when two people are speaking the same language, cultural differences
can affect vocabulary, colloquial expressions, voice tone and taboo topics.
3) CULTURAL AWARENESS
IN BODY LANGUAGE
To understand acceptable speaking distances,
conflict styles, eye contact and posture in different
cultures, accepting that the physical expressions of
their own culture are not universally accepted.

• Awareness of cultural differences in body language

can be just as important as the nuances of speech.
4) TIME DIFFERENCES
The advent of global collaboration
introduces another new dynamic to
communication skills -- the need to
communicate and share information with
people across several time zones. When
people collaborate with others on the
other side of the globe, their counterparts
are usually at home asleep while they
themselves are at work.
4) TIME DIFFERENCES
Today's communication skills development
programs should address the nuances of overcoming
this challenge by teaching people to understand the
information needs of their colleagues, according to
the communication styles of different countries or
cultures. Being able to effectively share information
between shifts can make or break the productivity of
a geographically dispersed team, making this an
important issue for many companies.
IV. The Effects of Globalization
on Global Communication
Connecting with people on the other side of the world is
now much easier than it was a few years ago.
Satellites, fiber-optic cables and the internet make it
effortless to share information with those in different
time zones and locations.

Global communication is directly affected by the process

of globalization, and helps to increase business
opportunities, remove cultural barriers and develop a
global village. Both globalization and global
communication have changed the environmental,
cultural, political and economic elements of the world.
1) Increased Business
Opportunities
• Many companies today hire employees that are located in
other countries. Imagine not being able to talk to them
instantly. That wouldn’t create a successful business
environment, would it?

• Using communication vehicles such as video calling make

it simple to converse with colleagues across the globe,
almost making it feel as if they are in the same room. With
this kind of communication technology, many businesses
are able to take advantage of opportunities in different
countries or cities, improving the economic outlook on a
global level.
2) Fewer Cultural Barriers
Many people perceive culture to be the root of communication challenges. When people from two
different cultures try to exchange information, the way they speak, their body language or their
mannerisms can be interpreted differently by the other person. The way people approach problems
and how they participate in communities is all influenced by culture.
2) Fewer Cultural Barriers
Globalization has made it possible, for example, for someone in Japan to understand how
someone in the U.S. goes about their day. With television and movies, cultural barriers are becoming
less prevalent. Being able to communicate effectively and frequently with colleagues or friends
across the planet helps people understand each other’s cultures a little better.
3) Creation of a Global Village
You’ve likely heard of the phrase "global
village," coined by theorist Marshall McLuhan.
Affected both by globalization and global
communication, the global village is created when
distance and isolation no longer matter because
people are connected by technology. Wide-spread
telephone and internet access have been
life-changing for many people across the world,
especially those in developing countries. Many are
now enrolling in universities across the world
without having to leave their desk chair.
3) Creation of a Global Village
Virtual assistant jobs are becoming commonplace, where employees from developing countries
work with companies in North America or Europe, providing administrative support and other
business services that can easily be conducted over the phone or via the internet.
3) Creation of a Global Village
Globalization and global communication have made it easier to see people on the other side of the
world as a neighbor, instead of a stranger from a faraway land. There is so much knowledge about other
countries and cultures available online, that it’s no longer a complete mystery.
IN A NUTSHELL
• The influence of globalization in recent decades
has impacted the types of communication skills
needed in various ways.

• Today, we need to understand the dynamics of

long-distance collaboration, the impact of Culture
on manners of speaking and body language, and
how we use technology to communicate with
people on the other side of the globe.
