What is Medicine?
Medicine is like a special kind of tool or
helper that doctors and nurses use to help
people feel better when they are sick.
Medicine comes in different types. They
may be liquid, tablet, capsule, cream or
lotion, powder, drops, inhalers, sprays and
injections.
Do you have all these types of medicine at “Not all teacher”
home, class?

There are two types of medicines:

1. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicine
Are drugs that we can buy without doctor’s
prescription.

Some examples of OTC Medicine:

 Antacid- A medication that
neutralizes stomach acid. It may be
liquid, chewable gummy or tablet
that dissolves in water to drink.
 Analgesic- Also called painkiller or
pain reliever, is a medicine used to
relieve pain or discomfort caused
by disease, injury or surgery.
Simple painkillers are OTC drugs
but painkillers to treat severe pain
like narcotics need prescription
from a doctor.
 Decongestant- A medicine that
relieves congestion by reducing
swelling, inflammation and mucus
formation within the nasal passages
or the eye. It is a relief for
congestion of the nose and sinuses
like blocked or stuffy nose (nasal
congestion).
 Antidiarrheal- A type of medicine
that stops or slows diarrhea or the
frequent passage of a watery loose
stool.
 Antihistamine- A medicine used to
treat allergic rhinitis such as
sneezing, runny and itchy nose and
itchy watery eyes. It can also
relieve itchiness caused by insect
bites, skin infection, chicken pox
and allergic reaction to food.
2. Prescription Medicine (Rx)
Are drugs that we can buy with doctor’s
prescription or authorization.
Some Examples of Rx Medicine:
 Antibiotic- A medicine that fights
bacterial infections.
It can be taken in different ways:
▪ Orally (by mouth).
▪ Topically.
▪ Injection or intravenously (I.V) like in
dextrose
 Antihypertensive- A medicine
used to lower blood pressure.
Using Medicines Safely
 Take under supervision of trusted adult
 Read and follow the directions on the
medicine labels carefully.
 Take medicines on time.
 Do not take someone else’s medicine
 Put medicines in a safe place away
from children and pets.
 Check the expiration date. Throw away
expired medicines and medicines you
no longer use.
 Ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if
you don’t understand the directions in
taking the medicines or if you
experience side effects.

Do you have any questions or clarifications

about our topic for today?
“None teacher”

C. Abstraction
Do you understand our lesson class?
“Yes teacher”
What is prescription medicine and over-
the-counter medicine?
“Prescription medicine teacher is a medicine
that needs a prescription from a doctor
while OTC teacher is a medicine that we
can buy without doctor’s prescription”
Why taking medicine is important in our
health? “Because it can cure sickness and diseases
teacher”
What will happen to us if there’s no
medicine?
(The pupils answer may vary)

D. Application

Do you want to play a game class?
“Yes teacher”
This game is called “Pass the Box”. So, I
have here a box and inside this box are
your names. To play this game, I have here
a music and what you need to do is to pass
the box while the music is playing. When
the music stops, the pupil holding the box
must pick a name inside the box. The
student whose name is drawn will then
respond to a question posed by the
teacher. Continue the game until all the
questions are answered.
