Day 3 Arithmetic - 064251
Addition of Integers
• If the signs are alike, add the numbers and place the common sign on the answer.
• If the signs are different, subtract the number portion and place the sign of the number farthest from zero on the
answer.
Examples:
1) 3 + 4 = 7 3) (−18) + (−12) = −30
2) 6 + (−9) = −3 4) (−5) + 20 = 15
Subtraction of Integers
In subtracting an integer from another integer, add the opposite of the subtrahend to the minuend.
For any number 𝑎 and 𝑏 , 𝑎 − 𝑏 = 𝑎 + (−𝑏) .
Examples:
1) 5 − 3 = 2 → 5 + (−3) = 2
2) 17 − 20 = −3 → 17 + (−20) = −3
3) (−12) − 6 = −18 → (−12) + (−6) = −18
4) 9 − (−8) = 17 → 9 + 8 = 17
5) (−20) − (−11) = −9 → (−20) + 11 = −9
Multiplication of Integers
Examples:
1) 6 × 6 = 36 3) (−12)(2) = −24
2) (−8)(−5) = 40 4) 9 • −7 = −63 Factor Factor Product
Dividend Divisor Quotient
Division of Integers + + +
− − +
• If two numbers have the same sign, then their quotient is positive.
+ − −
• If two numbers have different signs, then their quotient is negative.
− + −
Examples:
1) (−60) ÷ (−20) = 3 3) 90 ÷ (−9) = −10
2) 20 ÷ 5 = 4 4) (−16) ÷ 2 = −8
Exercise
Evaluate the following. (1 point each)
1) 42 + (−28) = 6) 39 − 80 = 11) 56 × −9 =
2) (−20) + (−30) = 7) 42 − (−8) = 12) −42 • 8 =
3) (−41) + 41 = 8) (−72) − (−4) = 13) −24 ÷ 8 =
−27
4) 101 + (−102) = 9) 49 − 48 = 14)
−3

5) (−2) − 11 = 10) (−25)(−40) = 15) 84 ÷ (−12) =
