SECTION A (50 MARKS)

Answer the following questions:

Question 1 (20 marks)

1.1 Suppose a rectangular room fits a minimum of 7 tables which have a


surface area of 1 square meter. If the perimeter of the room is 16m,
determine the length and width of the room.
N.B. You should use equations to attract full marks. (12)

1.2 Provide a graphical solution to the following system of equations:


N.B. You must label all points to attract full marks.

Question 2 (10 marks)

Answers should be rounded off to 3 decimal places.

2.1 Baobab is a small economy and the market demand-and-supply


functions for bananas are:
𝑞 𝑠 = 3𝑝 − 15
𝑞𝐷 = −4𝑝 + 48

Where: 𝑞𝐷 is the quantity of bananas demanded (in kilos), 𝑞 𝑠 is the quantity of


bananas supplied (in kilos) and p is the price per kilo of bananas (in rands).
Determine the price and quantity when the market is at equilibrium. (6)

2.2 Provide a graphical solution for on 2.1 (Label all points on the plotted
graph.) (4)

Question 3 (20 marks)

3.1 Suppose P(A) = 0.75 and P(B) = 0.82


Find the following:

a) P(A and B) if A and B are independent. (2)


b) P(not A and not B) if A and B are independent. (2)
c) P(A and not B) if A and b are independent. (2)
d) P(A or not B) if A and B are mutually exclusive. (2)
e) P (A and B) if A and B are mutually exclusive. (2)

3.2 Research was conducted on 68 students to find out their favourite


subject across year 12 and 13.

The results are below:

Represent the frequencies of the favourite subjects of students in each
