PATTERNS
Our terrific selection of authentic patterns each feature a front cover photograph of the finished article. On the back cover you will find a short history of the piece, as well as a listing of materials needed to complete the item, along with possible variations. These patterns were created so that anyone from the novice to the experienced seamstress will be comfortable using them. Each pattern has a size guide that allows easy modification for in-between sizes. Men's clothing patterns are sized from Small (36) to XXL (50) and 30 to 42 waists. Womens are sized 8 through 20, and childrens sizes are 4 to 12 in girls and 4 to 14 in boys. Moccasin pattern sizes for women are 5 through 10, men 7 through 12, children 4 through 13 and teen 1 through 6. We have included hide and cloth recommendations for each pattern. Our selection of top quality hides can be found on page 19, and our Trade Cloth on page 18. Dont forget your notions, imitation or genuine sinew, heavy duty cotton thread, glovers needles, buttons and ornamentation such as beads, shells, hairpipe and other decorations............... $7.95 each PLAINS WARSHIRT This pattern will help you create a beautiful traditional war shirt of an "open" style, or a more modern fitted style. Complete with the layout, cutting and decoration ideas. Recommend two 12-14 sq ft hides or two 10-12 sq ft hides and one 7-8 sq ft hide in a 2-4 oz weight. EARLY FRONTIERSMAN'S LEATHER SHIRT This pattern is taken directly from an old original shirt in a private collection. Its styling is mid to late 1800s with fringe and optional pockets. Recommend two 10-12 sq ft hides and one 7-8 sq ft hide in a 2-4 oz weight.
BREECHCLOUT & LEGGINGS The Breechclout and leggings were a necessary article of clothing that was common to the vast majority of tribes, and was worn by virtually all Plains people. This pattern is adaptable for both cloth and buckskin or leather. Recommend two 10-12 sq ft hides in 3-4 oz weight, or 1 1/4 yards trade cloth. Breechclout 6 sq ft hide in 2-3 oz weight or 1/2 yd tradecloth.
EARLY FRONTIERSMAN'S LEATHER PANTS This pattern is styled with a button front and slightly flared legs typical of those worn in the 1800's. An easy to follow pattern that has options for front pockets, leg fringe and belt loops. Recommend two 1214 sq ft hides in 3-4 oz weight.
PLAINS-STYLE BUCKSKIN DRESS This pattern is fashioned after the traditional three hide dress and has variations for both a natural and a tailored style. Recommend three 12-14 sq ft hides in 3-4 oz weight with optional one 10-12 sq ft for fringe.
PLAINS-STYLE MOCCASINS Using this pattern you can create either hard or soft sole two piece Plains style moccasins. Variations in tongue and sole are given, as well as ideas for adornment. Can be adapted for half sizes. Recommend one 7-8 sq ft hide in 4-5 oz weight, Glovers needles #1- #3, imitation sinew, and 1 12" x 8" rawhide or hard sole piece if desired.
PLAINS-STYLE CLOTH DRESS Cloth dresses came to the Plains with the advent of the fur trade. Variations can be seen in cloth or trade wool, both of which have become classic traditional outfits. Variations of sleeve and neckline are also shown, as well as complete directions for lining the dress. Recommend 4 to 4 1/2 yards trade cloth or calico material and 1/4 yard lining material.
PLAINS-STYLE HI-TOP MOCCASINS The Indians of the Southern Plains and Southwest adapted the hard sole moccasin into this boot style which is the most refined form of Native American footwear ever developed. Today they remain a popular style for dancing, camping or everyday wear. Recommend one 7-8 sq ft hide in 4-5 oz weight, Glovers needles #1- #3, imitation sinew, and 1 12" x 8" rawhide or hard sole piece if desired. 3

PLAINS-STYLE WRAP-AROUND HI-TOP MOCCASINS For Men and Women, creating both hard and soft sole wrap-around style moccasins in half calf or knee hi. Recommend one 7-8 sq ft hide in 4-5 oz weight, Glovers needles #1- #3, imitation sinew, and 1 12" x 8" rawhide or hard sole piece if desired. CHILDRENS MOCCASINS Make traditional moccasins either hard or soft sole, regular or high-top. Recommend at least 4 sq ft of hide in 4-5 oz weight, Glovers needles #3 - #5, imitation sinew, and 1 rawhide or hard sole piece if desired. GIRLS LEATHER DRESS Just like the three hide dress for Women, this girls dress includes styles for both a natural and a more tailored dress along with ideas for adornment. Recommend two 6-7 sq ft hides and one or two hides in 5-6 sq ft of a 2-3 oz weight.
GIRLS CLOTH DRESS The same pattern as the Cloth Dress for women, this classic style has sleeve and other variations. Recommend trade cloth or calico in 3 yards, and 3-5 yards in one or more colors of ribbon if desired.
WOMEN'S LEATHER ACCESSORIES This pattern includes a woman's accessories including knife sheaths, awl cases, strike-a-light and other possibles bags. Recommend 6 sq ft or more of 2-3 or 3- 4 oz weight and 2 sq ft of rawhide.
BOYS LEGGINGS & BREECHCLOUT The same style as men's of these classic clothing items for either leather or tradecloth. Recommend two 7-8 sq ft hides in 2-3 oz weight or 1 yard of tradecloth.
FRONTIERSMAN'S LEATHER ACCESSORIES All four of these items were used by fur traders and Indians during the 18th and early 19th century. The patterns are easy to use and include two rifle scabbards, leggings, knife scabbards, shooting bag and more. Recommend two 10-12 sq ft hides, 2 sq ft rawhide and 1 yard tradecloth if desired. GLOVES, MITTENS & GAUNTLETS Patterns for making sizes small through extra large, leather, fur backed mittens and cloth mittens or lining. Easy to use with complete instructions. Recommend 6 square ft of 2-3 oz weight and 1/2 yard trade cloth if desired.

RUFFLED RIBBON SHIRT A pattern to make a traditional ribbon shirt decorated with ribbons over the shoulders, down the top of the sleeves, and around the cuffs. It features a short collar and ruffle accents on the cuffs. Recommend 3 5/8 yards of cotton or cotton blend and 5 yards 1/4" to 1/2" ribbon in one or more colors. MOUNTAIN MAN'S WORKSHIRT This Mountain Man's work shirt is designed after typical shirts worn by mountainmen in the late 18th Century. It has many variations and features, including length, neck and underarm gussets, a fold down collar, long cuffs and shoulder reinforcements. Recommend 3 1/2 yards linen, linen blends, cotton, cotton blends. 4

BEADS & BEADWORK OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN By William C. Orchard. This foundational classic, finally available again, is a must for any beadworker's library.
