Key Concepts and Theorems in Triangle Geometry

Basic Definitions
Triangle: A polygon with three edges and three vertices.

Types of Triangles:

- Equilateral Triangle: All three sides are equal, and all three angles are 60 degrees.

- Isosceles Triangle: Two sides are equal, and the angles opposite these sides are equal.

- Scalene Triangle: All sides and all angles are different.

- Right Triangle: One angle is 90 degrees.

Important Theorems
Pythagorean Theorem: In a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the

squares of the other two sides.

Triangle Inequality Theorem: The sum of any two sides of a triangle is greater than the third side.

Congruence Theorems: Criteria for triangle congruence include SSS (Side-Side-Side), SAS

(Side-Angle-Side), ASA (Angle-Side-Angle), and AAS (Angle-Angle-Side).

Similarity Theorems: Criteria for triangle similarity include AA (Angle-Angle), SSS (Side-Side-Side),

and SAS (Side-Angle-Side).

Key Formulas
Area of a Triangle:

Area = 1/2 * base * height

Area = sqrt(s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)) (Heron's formula, where s = (a+b+c)/2 is the semi-perimeter)

Perimeter of a Triangle:

Perimeter = a + b + c
Centroid: The point where the three medians intersect, located at ((x1 + x2 + x3)/3, (y1 + y2 +

y3)/3).

Incenter: The point where the three angle bisectors intersect, which is also the center of the

inscribed circle.

Special Points and Lines


Centroid: The point where the three medians of a triangle intersect.

Orthocenter: The point where the three altitudes of a triangle intersect.

Circumcenter: The point where the perpendicular bisectors of the sides of a triangle intersect.

Incenter: The point where the angle bisectors of a triangle intersect.
