DESIGN OF BASE PLATE WITH AXIAL FORCE AND MOMENT (AS PER IS 800-
2007)

Design input:
150

Depth of the column =350 mm

Width of flange =200mm 600 300

Thickness of flange =20mm

150
Thickness of web =12mm
125 125

Bearing Stress of concrete =0.45x25x=11.25 N\mm 600
(allowable as per IS 456:2000)
Fu =410 N\mm2
36 mm thk plate
Fy =250 N\mm2

L ( length of base plate) = 600 mm

B ( breadth of base plate ) = 600 mm

Design axial force (Pu) = 692 kN (Compression)

Design moment (Mu) = 120 kN-m

1.0 Calculation of eccentricity:

6
120 x 10
e = 3 = 173 mm > L/6 (L/6 = 100 mm)
692 x 10

so, there will be tension in holding down bolts.

2.0 Calculation of bearing stress and tension in bolts : (from “Design of welded structures”
by Blodget. )
NA of col

692 x 103kN = pc

f = 225 mm
120x106 kN-m

Pmax

pt
(pt+ pc)
y/3
y
75 d = 525 mm
L = 600 mm

Step 1:
∑ V = 0;

(0.5 x Pmax x B x y ) – pt – 692 x103 = 0

Step 2:
∑ M = 0; (taking moment about neutral axis of column)

(pt x f ) + (pt+pc)(L/2-y/3) – 120 x 106 = 0

Here unknowns are Pmax , pt , y.

By solving this we will get a cubic equation,

Y3 + 3 (e – L/2)Y2 + 6 n As(f + e ) Y/B - 6 n/B As(f + e ) (L/2+ f) = 0(Refer

Substituting the values in the above equation ,

Y3 - 381Y2 + 5.6 x 10 4Y - 29.5 x 106 =0

Y = 417 mm

Sub ‘Y’ in ∑ M = 0,

pt x 225 + (pt +692 x 103) (300 -139) – 120 x 106 =0

pt = 23 kN

Sub ‘pt’ in ∑ V = 0,

0.5 x Pmax x 600 x 417 – 23 x 103 - 692 x 103 =0

Pmax = 5.7 N/mm2

4.Design of anchor bolts :

Tensile strength of bolt , Tnb = 0.9 x Anb x fub

Let us provide 20 mm dia bolts of 4.6 grade ,

Tensile strength of the bolt Tdb = Tnb/ γ mb

Tnb = 0.9 x 400 x 245 x 10-3 = 88.2 kN

Tdb = 88.2/1.25 = 70.56 kN 25 mm thk
