TITLE: CONSTRUCTION OF AN AC SOLAR RECHARGEABLE LANTERN

INTRODUCTION:

The AC solar rechargeable lantern is a sustainable lighting solution that harnesses the power of solar
energy to provide reliable and efficient lighting. This project aims to design and build a lantern that uses
solar energy to charge a rechargeable battery during the day, which then powers an LED light bulb at night.
The lantern will be equipped with an AC-DC converter to ensure efficient power conversion, a charge
controller to regulate energy flow, and protection mechanisms for short-circuits, overcharge, and thermal
management. This project combines renewable energy, energy storage, and power electronics to create a
innovative and eco-friendly lighting solution.

PROJECT STATEMENT:

The aim of this project is to design and construct a sustainable lighting solution that harnesses solar
energy to provide reliable and efficient lighting. The AC solar rechargeable lantern will utilize a solar panel
to charge a rechargeable battery during the day, which will then power an LED light bulb at night. The
system will incorporate an AC-DC converter to ensure efficient power conversion, a charge controller to
regulate energy flow, and protection mechanisms for short-circuits, overcharge, and thermal
management.

*AIMS:*

To design and construct a sustainable, efficient, and reliable AC solar rechargeable lantern that provides
reliable lighting for at least 8 hours, using solar energy as the primary power source.

*OBJECTIVES:*

1. DESIGN OBJECTIVE: Design a solar lantern system that incorporates a solar panel, rechargeable battery,
AC-DC converter, charge controller, and LED light bulb.

2. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OBJECTIVE: Achieve an energy efficiency of at least 80% in the AC-DC converter and
an overall system efficiency of at least 70%.

3. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Ensure the lantern provides reliable lighting for at least 8 hours on a single
charge.

4. SAFETY OBJECTIVE: Incorporate protection mechanisms for short-circuits, overcharge, and thermal
management.

5. COST-EFFECTIVENESS OBJECTIVE: Minimize the total cost of ownership, making the lantern an
affordable and sustainable lighting solution.

6. ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTIVE: Reduce carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions by harnessing
solar energy.

7. DURABILITY OBJECTIVE: Design the lantern to withstand various environmental conditions and have a
lifespan of at least 2 years.

8. SCALABILITY OBJECTIVE: Design the lantern to be easily replicable and deployable in various settings.

LITERATURE REVIEW

*SOLAR ENERGY*

- Solar energy is a great way to power things because it's renewable and free.
- Solar panels can be used to charge batteries during the day, so we can use the energy at night.

*BATTERIES*

- Rechargeable batteries are important for storing solar energy.

- We need to choose the right type of battery for our lantern.

*AC-DC CONVERTERS*

- AC-DC converters help us use the solar energy to power our lantern.
- We need to make sure the converter is efficient so we don't waste energy.

*LED LIGHTING*

- LED lights are energy-efficient and last a long time.

- We can use LED lights in our lantern to make it bright and efficient.

*SOLAR LANTERN DESIGN*

- We need to design our solar lantern carefully to make sure it works well.
- We should consider things like the size of the solar panel and the type of battery we use.

PRINCIPLES OPERATIONS

1. SOLAR CHARGING: Solar panels convert sunlight into DC power, charging the rechargeable battery
during the day.

2. BATTERY STORAGE: The rechargeable battery stores excess energy generated by the solar panels for use
at night or during power outages.

3. DC-AC CONVERSION: The DC power from the battery is converted to AC power by the AC-DC converter
(inverter) for powering the LED light bulb.

4. VOLTAGE REGULATION: The charge controller regulates the voltage and current from the solar panels to
prevent overcharging or damaging the battery.

5. SWITCHING: The user-friendly switch controls the lantern's operation, turning it on/off and selecting
modes (e.g., brightness levels).

6. LED LIGHTING: The AC power drives the high-efficiency LED light bulb, providing bright and reliable
lighting.

7. OVERCHARGE PROTECTION: The charge controller prevents overcharging, protecting the battery from
damage.
8. SHORT-CIRCUIT PROTECTION: The system protects against electrical shorts, ensuring safe operation.

9. SURGE PROTECTION: The AC-DC converter protects against voltage surges, ensuring reliable operation.
