SYLLABUS – INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

Course Description
Introduction to Business is dedicated to developing students’ understanding of business in the 21 st century and
how to develop an entrepreneurial mindset through design thinking. Students will explore fundamental topics
across business, economics, and technology by examining various case studies globally, domestically, and in their
local communities to develop entrepreneurial solutions. There will be a focus on communication through a variety
of digital formats and the integration of digital media as a means of collaborating and communicating professional
ideas.

Course Objectives
• Learn about the basics of business
• What a business is, how businesses are classified, how businesses are organized, how to read financial
statements
• Key economic concepts, business ethics, international business
• Learn about business entrepreneurship
• How new businesses are started and how they are structured
• How to formulate effective business plans for new business ideas
• Learn about business leadership, motivation, and teamwork
• How business leaders lead and motivate their employees to excel and produce positive results
• Learn about the soft skills of business
• Working in teams
• Communicating clearly, confidently, and succinctly
• How to work through moral dilemmas in a business context (i.e. keep God front and center)

Required Course Materials (bring to class daily)
Students are expected to bring the following materials to class each day:
• Laptop (Fully charged at the beginning of the day)
• Completed Homework
• Pencil and Eraser
• Three/Four Sheets of Blank Paper for Class Notes
• Binder or Folder (keep all problem sets, notes, quizzes, tests, and syllabus)

Textbook (electronic copy available on Canvas/Pearson, physical copy in classroom)


Better Business (High School 6th Edition) by Solomon, Poatsy, and Martin

Canvas
• Canvas will be the main hub for assigning and turning in assignments. It will also serve as the main hub for
the instructor to distribute class materials such as powerpoint presentations, quizzes, tests, and syllabus
• Assignments will be posted under the “Assignments” section of Canvas
• Completed assignments are required to be uploaded/turned-in on the “Assignments” section
• Physical copies of assignments may also be collected in class

Office Hours (in C-5)


• Monday Lunch (12:30 pm to 1:10 pm), Thursday Lunch (11:30 am to 12:15 pm)

The procedure for helping students via email


1. Take a picture of the problem (include any work you have done)
2. Attach the picture to an email and explain why you need help

Grading Structure

• Grades earned for this course follow the academic grading scale outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook.
These weighted percentages for this course may be adjusted during the year.

• Grades can be viewed on the FACTS portal from the first day of classes until the first day of Finals Week. The
electronic gradebook will be updated on the portal by Tuesday morning.

• More details on the grading structure can be found below.


Grading Details
• Participation (5%)
• Each student will start off with a 100% Participation grade
• Points will be deducted for:
• Not following classroom rules
• Not taking notes or participating in classwork
• Being disruptive (for example: unauthorized talking)
• For working on non-course assignments

• Deductions
• 1st violation will be a 10% deduction
• 2nd violation will be an additional 25% deduction
• 3rd violation will result in a 0% Participation grade for the course (there could
also be a referral to the Dean of Students office)

• Quizzes (10%)
• There will be 8 quizzes for the course (1 per chapter covered)
• Quizzes will consist of 10 questions and be multiple choice
• The primary purpose of the quizzes is to ensure students are on track in terms of understanding
the key lessons from each chapter

• Activities/Projects (25%)
• Activities will be done during class time and will be worth 10 points each
• Projects (except the Final Project) will be take-home (i.e. homework) and will be worth 15 points
each
• Both Activities and Projects (including the Final Project) will be graded on a standard rubric (see
rubric slide)

• Tests (45%)
• There will be 3 tests for the course, covering chapters 1-4, chapters 5-6, and chapters 7-8
• Tests will consist of a multiple choice section (drawn from the pool of Quiz questions) and a free
response section of 2-3 questions; maximum score for each test will be 100 points
• The teacher will provide a list of up to 5 free response questions on the Monday prior to the test
to help you prepare (all free response questions will have already been covered in class)
• Proper preparation is the key to doing well on tests

• Final Project (15%)


• The final project will be for students (in groups) to construct an effective business plan and will
test student’s understanding of many topics covered during the course
• For the final project, the instructor will choose the groups
• An example of an effective business plan will be provided to students for reference

Grading Scale/Late Policy


Per TKA standards (i.e. A+ is 98-100, A is 93-97, A- is 90-92, B+ is 87-89, B is 83-87, B- is 80-82, etc)

• Work turned in 1 day late receives a 20% penalty


• Work turned in 2 days late or more receives a 50% penalty
• Work turned in more than 4 weeks late receives no credit
