Crystal Structure
1 Matter
There are four states of matter.
1. Solid
2. Liquid
3. Gas
4. Plasma
State of Matter is characterized by
a. Thermal energy (Temperature)
b. Intermolecular Force of Attraction
If we consider graphite and quartz then their properties are different because their proper-
ties depends upon their bonding. In nature most of the solids are in the form of crystalline
solid because they are more stable as compared to amorphous solids as energy is released
during the formation of crystalline material is more than amorphous solids. As more energy
is released in the formation of a crystal will be more stable.
Basis: Basis is an atom or group of atoms. By attaching the basis to each lattice point, we
will get crystal structure. It is also called Motif.
crystals.
As lattice points are periodic are periodic so atoms will be periodic so this
arrangement will become crystalline solid.
2. Non-primitive: Lattice points are belonging to the corners as well as to the other po-
sition of the unit cell or effective number of lattice points are more than one. Example:
BCC, FCC, End centered cubic, Edge centered cubic.
Interplanar Spacing: It is denoted by dhkl . hkl are miller indices. Spacing between two
successive planes. Layer of atoms form crystal planes.
This formula is valid only for cubic, tetragonal and orthorhombic crystals.
For cubic crystal
a
dhkl = √ (2)
h2 + k 2 + l2
You must be knowing how to draw the miller indices and how to recognise
the drawn indices
Two dimensional lattices: Four crystal systems of two dimensional lattices are there.
Three dimensional lattices: There are seven groups of basic systems.
