Multiple riveting head MRX 2 Product description
3 Product description
3.1 Introduction
The multiple riveting head is deployed where several rivetings are to be performed
within a certain area simultaneously.
The multiple riveting head is therefore provided with 2 or more form tools.
The multiple riveting head is fitted in place of the cap on the riveting unit. Pressure
cup, form tool holder and pressure spring of the riveting unit are no longer
necessary.
Basically, different bearing and guide plates are used for the various rivet patterns.
It is possible to accommodate several rivet patterns in one and the same multiple
riveting head so that, by changing the form tool, different parts can be riveted.
With the aid of the multiple riveting head (with certain limitations), riveting to
differing heights is also possible.
The variations given above, however, require more precise clarification (forces,
spatial conditions).
To provide such clarification, we require a sample for assessment or for riveting
trials.
Utilization of the multiple riveting heads is subject to the following limitations:
• the riveting unit's available force must be distributed over the number of rivet
positions
• one sided rivet patterns are to be avoided as these could give rise to a side
force on the riveting head
• single riveting is to be avoided
Zuro
The multiple riveting head MRX 2 can be installed on all the BalTec riveting
machine types itemized below:
RN/RNE RNR RND SN/SNE

Note
The MRX 2 multiple riveting head can be fitted to the
riveting machine in 4 different positions, i.e. displaced by
the own axis at 90º intervals.

Top view
The riveting positions (see drawing above) can be laid out anywhere within the
hatched area (bearing in mind the minimum axis clearances).
The minimum clearance of the riveting positions is 15.5 mm!
For riveting positions outside a diameter of 70 mm, the distance ring 812017 must
be provided with recesses of radius 10.
Pay attention to an even allocation!
If the rivet pattern shall be dispIaced by 90º, the multiple riveting head can be fitted
correspondingly.

Form tools Multiple riveting head MRX 2
4 Form tools
4.1 Recommended materials, form tool design and closing head shapes
Recommended materials, form tool design and closing head shapes see operating
instructions Radial riveting machine.
Note
A use of form tool with flat or high crowned profile is
permitted only to the following head diameter :
MRX 2 : max. 5mm
The riveting force must be selected so that the load on each form tool is not more
than 8.5 kN. This must be particularly borne in mind for the machine series
RN/RNE/RND 331 and 381.
Note
In this way, excessive wear on bearing and pressure plate
or even breakage of the form tool holder can be avoided.
16 803386.001/ENG
Multiple riveting head MRX 2 Form tools
In contrast to the MRX 1, the MRX 2 has a form tool holder into which the form tool
is inserted and retained magnetically.
Longer form tools can be utilized by using form tool holders with larger radii. This,
however, reduces the riveting performance.
The following form tool lengths and radii are available:
Radius form tool Form tool length Free height Article-no. form
holder tool holder
R Ls FH
R59 (Standard) 43 27.5 812008
R78 62 36.5 812336
R88 72 41.5 812180
R106 76 50.5 812190
When using a form tool holder with radius 78, 88, 106 or special form tool holders
with radius >61, guide bushings, guide blocks or guide rings will be necessary
depending on the location of the riveting positions. The free height is in this case
the distance between the underside of the guide element and the riveting point.

1. Undo the 4 screws Pos. 26 (Pos. 27 if with protective cage)
2. Remove protective cage Pos. 42 (optional) and the multiple riveting head
Note
Depending on the installation position of the multiple
riveting head this could fall down!
3. Turn the multiple riveting head through 180º and place on a suitable surface.
It must be pointed out that the head is securely supported!
4. Remove guide plate Pos. 13 after loosening the 8 screws Pos. 28
18 803386.001/ENG
Multiple riveting head MRX 2 Form tools
Note
It is not recommended to withdraw the bearing plate directly
at the form tool holders Pos. 22. Drawing the driving flange
Pos. 3 at the same time would result in the guides and
cylindrical rollers Pos.17 falling apart. If this ever happens,
the multiple riveting head must be re-assembled in
accordance with chapter “Assembly multiple riveting head”
of these instructions.
Note
Further information about the assembly and greasing of the
parts can be found in the chapter “Cleaning and greasing
the individual parts”
The form tools of MRX 2 are retained magnetically and can be changed without
problems.
The rivet pattern can be altered by changing the bearing and guide plates.
Change of bearing and guide plate see chapter “Change form tool holders MRX 2”.
The article number of bearing and guide plate as well as the corresponding
customer-specific parts are indicated in the spare parts list.

Options Multiple riveting head MRX 2
5 Options
Use
For parts that must be held together before the form tool touches down or parts
that need to be pressed together with force for a press fit.
Pre-stress force
The more suitable of two spring variations (50-300N and 50-600N) is selected. The
distance sleeve (Pos. 4) is shortened to suit the required pre-tension or hold-down
force (see spring diagram).
Pressure pad components (plate, thrust piece)
The design of the pressure pad components can be seen in the spring diagram.
Note
Pressure pad plate and thrust pieces must be set up afresh
for each new customer application.

The lubrication device serves only to lubricate the contact surfaces between the
form tool/form tool shank (MRX 1) and form tool holder (MRX 2 and 3) respectively,
bearing plate and pressure plate, i.e. the multiple riveting head is not lubricated
throughout!
Lubrication grooves and holes for fixing the lubrication flange are provided in the
bearing plate. The layout is dependant on the rivet form.
Lubrication is made by the lubricator nipple. Lubricate with one shot of the grease
gun (grease type: Molykote G-Rapid) via the lubricator nipple, once every month if
the daily operation amounts to 8 hours. Under severe usage of the machine or shift
operation the frequency of lubrication must be increased accordingly.
Schutz
The operation with a riveting machine with multiple riveting head saves still residual
dangers. In order to avoid injuries a special protective cage is available as option.

Multiple riveting head MRX 2 Maintenance and repair work
For safety reasons, maintenance and repair work may only be carried out by
trained specialist personnel.
The MRX multiple riveting head is long-term pre-greased. Regular cleaning and
greasing of the highly stressed internal parts should take place every 12 months or
after 2000 working hours.
