STUDY MATERIAL

9.1. INTRODUTION TO CAD

CAD (computer-aided design) is the use of
computer-based software to aid in design processes.
CAD software is frequently used by different types of
engineers and designers. CAD software can be used to
create two-dimensional (2-D) drawings or three-
dimensional (3-D) models.
The purpose of CAD is to optimize and
streamline the designer's workflow, increase
productivity, improve the quality and level of detail in
the design, improve documentation communications
and often contribute toward a manufacturing design
database. CAD software outputs come in the form of
electronic files, which are then used accordingly for
manufacturing processes.

Why should you use CAD?

Traditional drafting is repetitious and can be
inaccurate. It may be faster to create a simple "rough"
sketch by hand but larger more complex drawings with
repetitive operations are drawn more efficiently using

9.3 AUTOCAD LAYERS
The layer command is used to control and
manage the drawings in AutoCAD for different
purposes. It increases the display performance of the
AutoCAD by hiding the portion of our drawing when
needed. It also improves the visual complexity of the
drawing. We are required to create a set of layers
having different properties. For example, in a floor plan
or house plan, we can create separate layers for doors,
walls, etc. We can create many layers by specifying the
name for the corresponding layer. We can also control
the order of the layers.
The shortcut command of the layer is 'LA'.
The Layer on the ribbon panel looks like the below
image:

AutoCAD Layers
Let's discuss the layer properties in detail.
Layer ON/OFF
It is used to turn ON or turn OFF the layer of the
selected object.
The layer is represented as:

The shortcut command for the Layer ON and Layer
OFF is LayON and LayOFF.
