Changing the Number or Type of Components in a Circuit

 Learning Competency
- Determine the effects of changing the number or type of components in a circuit.

I. ELICIT - Activating students' prior knowledge

 Directions: Arrange and drag the following materials below to create a complete
and closed electrical circuit.

2.

1. 3.

II. ENGAGE - Hooking students' interests; making students wonder

 (Demonstration, puzzle / discrepant event, game, reading activity, video)
 Study the illustration below.
 Have you observed that in a series of Christmas lights, once the bulb is busted the
entire series lights will not light up?
 Compare it with the lights at home.
 Does it also follow when a bulb in a room is busted, the bulbs in the other parts of
the house do not light up?

III. EXPLORE - Allowing students to experience science phenomenon first hand

(laboratory activity, simulation, problem-solving, determining patterns from a set of data,
constructing a model)
 Study the illustration below. Which do you thick of the two set ups of electrical
circuit below that the remaining bulb would still light up?

IV. EXPLAIN - Providing substantial discussion and activities for concept

development (logically sequenced questions, context-based examples, videos /
pictures, stories)

 Electricity can flow through the components in a complete electric circuit.

 Basic Components of Electric Circuit:
 Source – electrical power
 Path – conductor
 Load – device
 Switch - control

 Complete Circuit – complete path around which electricity can flow

 Incomplete Circuit – current cannot flow

 Bulbs or loads that are connected one after the other in one chain is called a
series circuit.

 In a series circuit, electric current flows

through a single path, so when one bulb
is loosened or busted all the other bulbs
will not light anymore.

 On the other hand, a parallel circuit

bulbs/loads are arranged with
different loops.

 Each bulb/load has a different path/loop.

 When one bulb is loosened, taken or
burned out, the other bulbs still light up.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN IF WE CHANGE SOME OF

THE COMPONENTS OF THE CIRCUIT?

 What will happen if we add more batteries to the circuit?

 Adding more batteries will increase the electrical energy, which will
make bulb brighter.

 What about if we add more bulbs into the circuit?

 Adding more bulbs to a series circuit will make all the other bulbs
dimmer.

 What will happen if we lengthen the wires of the circuit?

 Lengthening the wires in a circuit will make the bulb dimmer. The
longer the wire the more the resistance so less electric current can flow
thus, the bulb become dimmer.

 What about if we thicken the wires in the circuit?

 Thickening the wire in a simple circuit will make the bulb brighter.
The thicker the wire the less the resistance so more electric current can
flow.

V. ELABORATE - Exposing students to alternative and more advanced applications

(real-world examples, applications in other fields)

 Directions: Read and analyze the given problem below. Write a brief explanation
to justify your answer.

1. Bogohanons are known for their love for cooking. With these, the city held a
cooking contest called “Sangka sa Kaha” in celebration of its 14th Charter
Day. The contestants were bringing all the kitchen gadgets and utensils that
they could possibly use. Listed below are some of the following kitchen
appliances, that they have brought.
 Mixer
 Heater
 Blender
 Rice cooker
 Electric stove
 Pressure Cooker

What do you think is the best type of electrical circuit that the contest
organizer should use to plug in and turn on the appliances safely? Why?

VI. EVALUATE - Assessing learning outcomes (quiz, games, creative output)

A. Directions: Fact or Bluff. Identify whether the following statement is correct

or not. Write Fact if it is correct and Bluff if not.

FACT 1. In a parallel circuit, when one bulb burned out, the other bulbs
will still light up.
BLUFF 2. A parallel circuit has only one path of electricity.
BLUFF 3. At home, it is better to use a series circuit.
FACT 4. In a series circuit, when one bulb is burned out, all the other
bulbs will not light up.
BLUFF 5. In a series circuit, electricity can still flow through the other
pathways.
FACT 6. Adding more bulbs to a simple circuit will make the bulbs
dimmer.
BLUFF 7. The longer the wire the more the resistance so less electric
current can flow and the bulb dimmer.
BLUFF 8. The thicker the wire, the lesser the resistance so more electric
current can flow.
FACT 9. Adding more batteries to a circuit will increase the electrical
energy, which will make bulb brighter.
FACT 10. A series circuit does not require many wiring components.
B. Directions: Read and analyze the following questions. Press the button of the
correct answer.
1. Imagine a simple circuit with one 1.5 volts battery and a bulb. When the 1.5
volts battery is replaced with a 3 volts battery, what will happen?
o The bulb gets brighter.
o The bulb gets dimmer.
o The bulb stays at the same level of brightness
o Nothing has changed.
2. A simple circuit has long coiled wire, 1.5 volts and a bulb. Why does the
bulb get dimmer?
o the power supply is not enough to light the bulb brighter
o the load is too many
o the wire is too long
o the wire is too short
3. Which of the following is NOT a part of a simple electric circuit?
o source of electricity
o conducting wire
o electromagnet
o an electric device
4. What needs to be done to this circuit so that the lamp lights up?
o Close the switch.
o Add another wire.
o Add another bulb or lamp.
o Add a battery and close the switch.
5. A group of pupils are gathering materials to build their electric circuit.
Which material will allow the electricity to flow between the battery and
the buzzer?
o copper wire
o rubber tube
o cotton spring
o wooden rod

VII. EXTEND - Give remedial / enrichment activities to resolve / enhance students'

understanding.
A. Directions: Identify the advantages and disadvantage of using a series or
parallel connection.

Types of Circuit Advantages Disadvantages

Series Circuit
 Does not require  Only one pathway for
many wiring an electric current to
connections and flow through
circuit components
 When one bulb burns
out, all the other bulbs
burn out/won’t glow

Parallel Circuit
 Two or more  Require many wiring
pathways for an connections and
electric current to components
flow through

 When one bulb burns

out, the other bulbs
will continue to glow
