1. Find two consecutive natural numbers whose squares have the sum 221.
2. The sum of the squares of three consecutive natural numbers is 149. Find the numbers.

his son’s age. Find their present ages.
12. The sum of the ages of a father and son is 45 years. Five years ago, the product of their
ages was four times the father’s age at that time. Find their present ages.
13. A footpath of uniform width runs round the inside of a rectangular field 32m long and
24m wide. If the path occupies 208sq.m, find the width of the footpath.
14. The hypotenuse of a right angled triangle is one meter less than twice the shortest side.
If the base of the triangle is one meter more than the shortest side, determine the
lengths of the three sides of the triangle.
15. A fast train takes one hour less than a slow train for a journey of 200 km. If the speed of
the slow train is 10km/hr less than that of the fast train, find the speed of the two trains.
16. A plane left 40 minutes late due to bad weather and in order to reach its destination
1600 km away in time, it had to increase its speed by 400 km/hr from its usual speed .
Find usual speed of the plane.
17. A motor boat whose speed in still water is 15km/hr, goes 40 km downstream and comes
back in a total time of 6 hours. Find the speed of the stream.
18. A cyclist cycles non-stop from A to B a distance of 14 km at a certain average speed. If
his average speed reduces by 1 km per hour, he takes 20 minutes more to cover the
same distance. Find his original average speed.
19. The speed of a boat in still water is 8 km/hr. It can go 12 km upstream and return
downstream to the original point in 2 hours 45 minutes. Find the speed of the stream.
20. The speed of a boat in still water is 8 km/hr. It can go 15 km upstream and 22 km
downstream in 5 hours. Find the speed of the stream.
21. A piece of cloth cost Rs. 35. If the piece were 4 metres longer and the cost of each metre
were Re. 1 less, the cost would have remained unchanged. How long is the piece?
22. If two pipes function simultaneously, the reservoir will be filled in 12 hours. One pipe
fills the reservoir 10 hours faster than the other. How many hours will the second pipe
take to fill the reservoir?
23. Two circles touch externally. The sum of their areas is 130π sq. cm and the distance
between their centres is 14 cm. Find the radii of the circles.
24. The hotel bill for a number of persons for overnight stay is Rs. 4800. If there were 4
more, the bill of each person had to pay would have reduced by Rs. 200. Find the

26. A person on tour has Rs 480 for his daily expenses. If he stretches his tour programme
by two more days, he must cut down his daily expenses by Rs 20 per day. How long was
his tour programme?
27. A takes 12 days less than B to finish a piece of work. If A and B together can finish the
work in 8 days, find the time taken by B to finish the work.
28. A peacock is perched on a 9-feet-high pillar. From a distance of 27 feet from the pillar, a
snake is coming to its hole at the bottom of the pillar. Seeing the snake, the peacock
pounces upon it. If their speeds are equal, at what distance from the hole is the snake
caught?
29. A dealer sells an article for Rs 39 and gains as much per cent as the cost price of the
