7. The vectors 𝒑 = (𝛼 + 1)𝒊 + 3𝒋 and 𝒒 = 𝒊 + 5𝒋 are perpendicular to vectors 𝒓 = 4𝒊 + 𝛽𝒋


and 𝒔 = (2𝛽 + 6)𝒊 + (𝛼 − 3)𝒋 respectively. Find the values of the constants 𝛼 and 𝛽.
8. A truck retards uniformly from a velocity of 15 𝑚𝑠 −1 and comes to rest in 5 seconds.
Find the:
(𝑎) retardation of the truck;
(𝑏) distance covered by the truck during this period.

PURE MATHEMATICS
9. (𝑎) If the radius of a circle increases at the rate of 0.8 𝑚𝑠 −1, find in terms of 𝜋, the rate
at which the area increases when the radius is 6.5 𝑚.
(𝑏) Find the equation of the tangent to the curve 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 2𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 3 = 0 at (2, 1).

10. Given that (𝑥 + 2) and (2𝑥 + 3) are factors of 𝑓(𝑥) = 6𝑥 3 + 𝑝𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 𝑞, where 𝑝


and 𝑞 are constants. Find the:

(𝑎) values of 𝑝 and 𝑞;

(𝑏) roots of 𝑓(𝑥).

11. An estate developer had a forty-year building plan for a country starting from January
2001. The number of houses to be built each year forms an arithmetic progression (𝐴. 𝑃. ).
372 houses were built in 2010 and plan to build 1, 032 houses in 2040. Find the:

(𝑎) number of houses expected to be built in 2023;

(𝑏) total number of houses expected from the developer at the end of the forty years.

13. The probability of obtaining a head from throwing a biased coin is 3. If the coin is tossed

𝟔 times, find correct to four decimal places, the probability of obtaining:


(𝑎) exactly 3 heads;
(𝑏) at least 4 heads;
(𝑐) at most 2 heads.

PART III
VECTORS AND MECHANICS

14. A particle moves along a straight line such that after time 𝑡 seconds, its displacement
𝑆 (𝑚) from the starting point is given by 𝑆 = 𝑡 3 − 15𝑡 2 + 63𝑡 − 40. Find the:
(𝑎) distance from the starting point when the particle is momentarily at rest for the first
time;
(𝑏) velocity of the particle when its acceleration is 18 𝑚𝑠 −2.

15. The vertices 𝑃, 𝑄 and 𝑅 of a triangle have position vectors 𝒑 = 4𝒊 + 𝒋, 𝒒 = 6𝒊 − 2𝒋 and


𝒓 = 7𝒊 + 3𝒋 respectively. Calculate the:
(𝑎) length of the three sides and name the type of the triangle;
(𝑏) area of the triangle;
(𝑐) value of ∠ 𝑃𝑄𝑅.
