LET REVIEW

(FOR FILIPINO MAJOR)

(ED 403)
The Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) was implemented
in the Philippines on December 16, 1994 to strengthen and
improve not only the teachers, but also the quality of education
and the whole education system in general. This implementation
was done because of Republic Act 7836, otherwise known as the
“Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994”. Before
R.A. 7836 was carried out, education in the Philippines was
mostly regulated and supervised by the National Board for
Teachers (NBT). Even though R.A. 7836 was signed as law in
1994, the first LET exam was conducted on August 1996, in
which it was administered by both the Board for Professional
Teachers (BPT) and the Professional Regulation Commission
(PRC). Aspiring teachers must secure a license before being able to
teach in the public schools and some private schools because of this law.
The main objective of LET REVIEW is to make the
students work with the right attitude and standards,
and to develop critical thinking skills for them to obtain
the ability to: (1) demonstrate knowledge and mastery
on the use of Filipino as a global language in a
multilingual context as it applies to the teaching of
language and literature; (2) demonstrate proficiency
and understanding of different literary elements and
literary works from the Philippines and other countries;
(3) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of
grammar rules and linguistics specifically syntactical
cognizance on how phrases and clauses are formed and
the kinds based on functions;
3

4) display skills and understanding of language usage such as

(

vocabulary and the morphological components of words and

word formation; (5) exhibit knowledge and understanding of
the appropriate approaches, methods, and techniques in
teaching English including technological tools; (6) effectively
communicates in English and Filipino both orally and in writing;
(7) articulate the rootedness of education in philosophical,
socio-cultural, historical, psychological, and political contexts;
and (8) apply skills in the development and utilization of ICT to
promote quality, relevant and sustainable practices.

LET US KNOW LET (LICENSURE EXAMINATION FOR
TEACHERS)
DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS

TOPIC 1: WHAT IS LICENSURE EXAMINATION FOR TEA

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
The Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) is a
nationwide test for all aspiring teachers. This licensing test is
biannually conducted for both primary and secondary levels
of teaching. Performance in the board examinations is taken
as one of the measures of the quality of a program. If the rate
of the first attempt passing is high, it is a good measure of
program excellence (Professional Regulation Commission
CHED, 2004). Additionally, as cited by Hermosisima (2003),
one of the most commonly mentioned indicators of quality of
higher education programs in the country is the performance
of the graduates in the licensure examinations.
The licensing examination is one of the last hurdles that
a candidate must face in the licensing process. A board has
the ultimate responsibility to ensure that the examination
meets technical, professional, and legal standards, and,
protects the health, safety and welfare of the public by
assessing candidates’ abilities to practice competently.
Once a candidate has passed a licensing examination, the
board must be comfortable granting the license, thus
assuring the public that the licensee is minimally qualified
to practice at the time of initial licensure.
These days, soon-to-be teachers must obtain and
maintain a teaching certificate—one of which is to
pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers (Libman,
2009). Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) is a test of
the overall knowledge and proficiency of soon-to-be
teachers to provide a reliable structure, which the practice
can be measured and proven, and it gives access to
continuing growth and development.

Tips and Suggestions in Taking the LET
(Licensure Examination for Teachers)
By Mark Anthony Llego
1)Familiarize yourself with the parts of a
multiple-choice item.
All test items in the LET are of this type.
Knowing the parts of the item can facilitate
the analysis of each item and the choice of
the best option.
For example:

The National Secondary Achievement Test (NSAT) is

administered to secondary school students before
they graduate. What does NSAT measure?

A.The strength and weakness of students –

Distractors
B.How much the students have learned – Key
C.The students’ potential for college work –
Distractors
D.The learning problem of high school students –
Distractors
2)Know the test directions ahead of time.
A thorough understanding of the test directions as well as type of
questions will not only save time but also prevent misunderstanding of
what you are to do.
3)Be alert to read the test items as they are not as you would like them
to be.
4)Pay attention to the key terms in a test item.
5)Use time wisely.
6)Consider all the alternatives.
For example:
Three is to triple as...
A.twelve is to dozen
B.multiply is to many
C.pair is to trousers
D.two is to double
7)Relate options to the stem of the item.
8)Make use of grammar to help decide the correct
answer.
9)Use logical reasoning
Make the completed statement logically consistent.
10)With regard to items on verbal analogies, be
aware of the commonly used relationships.
11)On reading comprehension items, remember
that there are 2 broad categories: explicit and
inferential.
12)Use the time remaining after completion of the
test to consider and improve your answers.
Tips on Passing the Licensure Examination for
Teachers (LET)
1)Make a list of your weakest subjects in college.
Create your own reviewer for each and do not be
contented in this review subject.
2)Create a time table. This will keep you organize.
Your time table will be useful for you to check the
things that needed to be done and reviewed.
3)Know the focus of the exam. Be sure that you
know the coverage of the exam for you to be able
to review thoroughly.
4)Spend at least 1 to 4 hours reading lectures
every day. It can enhance retention, and it is a
good way to activate the brain cells.
5)Do not memorize too much, because some
items are situational. Thus, instead of
remembering, try understanding deeply the
lectures you are reading. Retention is higher
when you digest and relate what you learn to
other concepts or ideas.
6)Do not take general education lightly. Though
it is only 20% in the overall rating, receiving a
very low grade on it means you do not qualify
to obtain a license.
7)Be serious in taking the test. This is a licensure
exam, a difficult one. Your four years of hardship
in college and your entire career depend on this
exam.
8)Prepare everything that you will need weeks
before the examination to avoid agitation. Too
much excitement and nervousness affect the
brain and its function.
9)Get enough sleep, relax and don’t forget to take
a rest. As much as possible, do not review on the
day before the test, give your brain a rest.
10)Pray.
