literary genres typically describe writing styles
such as poetry, essays, novels, short stories
and plays. Genres may be determined by
literary technique, tone, content, or length
(especially for fiction).

• SETTING
the setting in literature refers to the time
and place in which a story occurs.
The place can be a real place like the city
of New York, or it can be an imagined
location. The time can be a real time
period (past or present) or imagined
(future).

• CHARACTERS

A character is a person, animal, creature, or thing


in a story. Writers use characters to perform the
actions, moving the story along a plot line.

Most stories have multiple characters interacting,

conflict for, or opposing the protagonist.

• NARRATOR & POINT OF VIEW

The point of view is the perspective through which a


story is narrated.
In a first-person POV, the narrator is part of the story
and can interact with the other characters. The pronouns
“I”, “we”, and “us” are used to express the narrator’s
thoughts and feelings.
In a third-person POV, the narrator is removed from the
story and cannot interact with other characters. There

(the narrator knows all the thoughts and feelings of the
characters in the story) and limited (the narrator relates

If someone asks you “What is the story about?”, then they are
asking about the PLOT of the story. To answer this questions
there are some things you should pay attention to:

• Focus on general events, but make sure you include relevant


details that contribute to the overall understanding of the
story.

• The events of the story are often told in chronological order.

the present tense, but you can also use past tenses to talk about the story.

Choose one tense and stick to it throughout your presentation.

at any given time, so the mood of a story is the overall
feeling the reader gets.

The tone of a story is the writer’s attitude toward the


subject. In other words, a reader can determine how the

Conflict is closely linked to the theme of a narrative, as


it motivates the characters and affects the plot. It
usually appears when the protagonist (main character)
faces an obstacle or hardship.

There are two main types of conflict: internal (a

place between different people or groups of people).

A literary theme is the main idea or underlying


meaning a writer explores in a novel or short
story. It’s an abstract concept that can be
embodied using characters, setting, dialogue,
plot, or a combination of all these elements.
