Positive Negative

Disclaimer: If you are able to categorize your answers as positive that is very good
it only indicates that your beliefs are taking you into something that is good. The
reason why we are going to point out the negative side of religion is to use them in
our advantage. Knowing the negative things will enable us to overcome them or
eliminate them.

C. Presenting the new lesson

In this part of our lesson, you will be introduced to the negative effects of
religion and belief system. Please take note of the important words. Your
dictionary could help you in understanding those words so you are encourage to
use it. Please be reminded that the negative effects will be discuss to be use in our
advantage of eliminating them.

Negative Effects of Religion

1. Religion promotes division- Some religious doctrines cause division
between their members and non members of their beliefs. One example of
this is the teaching in Koran where it states that” They wish that you disbelieve
as they disbelieve and then you would be equal. Therefore, take not to
yourselves friends of them.
“Be ye not unequally yoked with unbelievers” says the Christian Bible.
This teaching may discourage intermarriage and promote in-group and
outgroup concept. This can become-potentially harmful in the perceived in-
group becomes excessive such as developing in-group favoritism,
discrimination and group biases.
2. Religion teaches dependence- they say that ther is a relationship
between religiosity and resignation. For instance in some conservative sects
of Judaism, Christianity and Islam women are deemed more righteous if they
let God manage their family. Famines, poverty and diseases attributed the will
of God. For some this attitude is harmful to the society at large as well as to
individuals. For believers this attitude manifest humility and submission to the
will of the creator.
3. Religion sanctions barbarism and violence- this is often characterized
by superstition, ignorance, inequality, racism and violence. Religions sacred
text are said to sanction these things including slavery, women and children
being possession of men and sacrificing living animals. It is further claimed
that believer is looking to excuse his own rage through the will of God.
However, it is believed that these sanctions are just the misinterpretation of
the Holy Books.
4. Religion instill fear-On their doctrine about sin, they believed that
people have innate sin thus they should act accordingly or they will be judge
3
into hell. This created fear among humans thus it urged them to do good
things out of fear of being sent to hell. Nonetheless it was explain that it is ok
to fear in the Lord because that is the only way for people to be saved from
eternal suffering. To avoid hell religion indeed require people to prove to God
that they are worthy of heaven.
5. Religion infuse guilt- many beliefs taught people that they are naturally
sinners thus they need to become perfect being to become worthy of heaven.
This fact infuses guilt to people if they fail to do the right things, nonetheless
they say that having guilt is a good sign that we are striving to have a new life.

Synthesis: Looking at the negative effects of Religion towards us. These

concepts remind us to be consistent and not to extend our boundaries. One
good example of that is concept number 1 religion may divide us of what we
practice for our beliefs but it should not divide us by thinking that one belief is
superior to the others. Remember that these beliefs may differ but their main
goal is to keep us close to God.

Activity: To check your understanding of the given concept kindly answer the
following question.
1. How will you define barbarism?
2. Cite one example of practice that is exclusive only to one belief system or
religion?
3. How can we use these negative effects of religion to improve our wellbeing
as a person?

D. Discussing new concepts about the lesson

Positive Effects of Religion
1. Religion helps man to bear his sufferings- religion explains and
justifies human sufferings and griefs. It explains that everything that
happens is according to the grand design of the omniscient GOD and
ultimately one sorrow has a meaning.
2. Religion boosts self-worth and dignity- religion explains that no
matter who you are you are important in the eyes of God and you are
considered as His beloved son. Religion thus help people endure their
suffering and frustrations.
3. Religion serves as a foundation of societal harmony- religion is a
source of social unit by providing social values and ethic norms. Example “
Children should obey their parents”. A woman should always be faithful to
her man and vice versa.”
4. Religion helps create disciplined and beneficial citizen- Religion
provides model for ideal living. For instance, Christian strives to be Christ-
like, Buddhist imitate Buddah.
5. Religion promotes Social Welfare and Development- religion
promotes literacy, numeracy, education and research by putting up
academic institution. Some religions sponsor charitable institutions like
hospitals, homes and social welfare center.

4
Activity: To check your understanding of the given concept kindly answer the
following question.
1. How does religion help us in overcoming our sufferings?
2. How does religion describe us in the eyes of GOD?
3. Cite an example wherein your religion was able to promote social welfare
and development.

E. Discussing new concepts about the lesson

To clarify the new concepts that we learned about the positive and negative effect
of religion let us have an activity that will involve you through it.

Activity 1: Choose three among the negative effects of religion and explain how
will you use it to your advantage.

Example: Religion instill fear- I will use this in my advantage to strive more to
become a good person so that I will be able to eliminate fear. I will do things
accordingly based on the teaching of God.
1._______________________________________________________________
2._______________________________________________________________
3._______________________________________________________________
Activity 2: Let us spread the positivism of having a religion by giving realistic
examples of its positive effect. Cite some examples that your religion is doing
which applies to the positive effects of religion.

Example: Religion Promotes welfare and development: I am a catholic our church

usually feeds homeless children coming from the donations for the church.

2._______________________________________________________________

F. Developing Mastery
To develop more of your knowledge about our topic, you will be introduced to the
different historical even in religion where some of the positive and negative
effects of religion where used.

The Crusade
The Crusades were a series of religious wars initiated, supported, and
sometimes directed by the Latin Church in the medieval period. The term refers
especially to the Eastern Mediterranean campaigns in the period between 1096
and 1271 that had the objective of recovering the Holy Land from Islamic rule.
The term has also been applied to other church-sanctioned campaigns fought to
combat paganism and heresy, to resolve conflict among rival Roman Catholic
groups, or to gain political and territorial advantage. The difference between
these campaigns and other Christian religious conflicts was that they were
considered a penitential exercise that brought forgiveness of sins declared by the

5
church. Historians contest the definition of the term "crusade". Some restrict it to
only armed pilgrimages to Jerusalem; others include all Catholic military
campaigns with a promise of spiritual benefit; all Catholic holy wars; or those with
a characteristic of religious fervour.

Widow Burning Among the Hindus in India

Sati, or the practice of self-immolation of a widow on her husband’s funeral
pyre, is said to have originated 700 years ago in India. It is believed to have
started among the ruling class or rajputs in India, when the rajput women burnt
themselves to death after their men were defeated in battles to avoid being taken
by the conquerors. Later on, it has become a manifestation of wifely devotion. It
has been outlawed by the British rulers in 1829 but rare cases still continue to
occur. In 2006, a Hindu woman was reported to have committed sati in Tuslipar
village in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

The woman, whose name was Janakrani, was said to have burnt herself to death
on the funeral pyre of her husband Prem Narayan. According to the villagers,
after the cremation, the widow told them she had to attend to some work, but
when they went looking for her they found her dead on the pyre. Reports said
that nobody forced her to commit the act.

Checking of Understanding: To test your understanding of the two examples of

religious historical events kindly answer the given questions below.
1. What is the main goal of the crusades?
2. Who are the primarily involved in the crusades?
3. What is self immolation?
4. Where does it originated?
5. Who is commonly involved in self- immolation?
6. What is the reason behind self-immolation?

G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

Things to Ponder: Using the two religious historical events above let us
identify the positive and the negative.
Example: Event: The Crusade
Positive: Helps us to carry our suffering by…
Negative: Promotes division because...

Event: The Crusade

Event: Widow Burning in India
