NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, ROURKELA - 769 008

End Semester Examination 2021-22

B. Tech. 6th Semester(Spring), April - 2022
Subject: CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY (CE- 2201)

Full Marks: 50 Duration of Exam: 3 Hours

Answer all the questions. Assume suitable data if found missing.

1. Explain the rapid mix design procedure in short. Describe the Maturity method and write
down the strength- maturity relationship. (5+5)
2. Describe the surface hardness test method for hardened concrete mentioning its
limitations, advantages and disadvantages. (8)
3. What is alkali-silica reactivity (ASR)? Enlist the factors that promote the alkali-aggregate
reaction. How the damage from alkali-silica reaction (ASR) can be controlled in a
concrete structure? (5)
4. Write short notes on the following: (a) Fire resistance of concrete, (b) Modulus of
elasticity of concrete and (c) Geopolymer concrete (3x3)
5. Explain the drying and plastic shrinkage. Write down the factors affecting the shrinkage
of concrete. (8)
6. Using IS10262-2009: guidelines for concrete mix proportioning, design a M25 concrete
mix for a reinforced concrete structure to be subjected to mild exposure conditions during
its service life for the following requirements: (10)
(a) Design stipulations:
Degree of workability: Medium (75-100 mm slump)
Degree of quality control: Weigh batching, occasional supervision, no past
experience with this grade, S = 5.5 MPa
(b) Characteristics of materials:
Cement
Type and grade: Ordinary Portland cement, G - 43
Specific gravity: 3.15
Bulk density: 1450 kg/m3

1
Aggregates Fine aggregate Coarse aggregate
Type River sand (zone II) Crushed granite
Maximum nominal size − 20 mm
Specific gravity 2.60 2.65
3
Bulk density (kg/m ) 1700 1800
Fineness modulus 2.3 6.0
Free surface moisture (per cent) 2.0 1.0
(c) Consider the following data and table to solve the problem:
Assume water-cement ratio: 0.45
Maximum free water-cement ratio: 0.55
Minimum cement content (IS 456:2000): 300 kg/m3
Maximum cement content (IS 1343-1980): 450 kg/m3
Table 1: Maximum water content for nominal maximum size of aggregate

Table 2: Proportion of coarse aggregate to total aggregate for different zones of fine aggregate and
for water-cement ratio of 0.5
