Unit 4
Track 4.1
Stella: Biology is my favourite subject. I like learning about the body and I also enjoy finding out about
plants and trees. It’s so interesting. I like it best when we do experiments, and I really enjoy the
way Mr Singh explains things clearly. He’s strict but he has got a good sense of humour. He often
makes us all laugh and I like that.
Track 4.2
Mara: Yasmin, have you got another pen? I’ve forgotten mine.
Yasmin: Yes, I’ve got three pens. Do you want to borrow one?
Mara: Yes, please.
Yasmin: You’re always forgetting your equipment. Yesterday you forgot all your notebooks.
Mara: I know! There is always so much to carry. My school bag is so heavy. And it was worse at my
primary school, because we were smaller then.
Yasmin: Yes, it’s hard for small children. It’s better at this school because we have safe places to keep
things in. But there are more classes and more books – I have three textbooks just for chemistry.
Mara: That’s right. Oh …can I borrow a pencil and an eraser too?
Yasmin: Yes, here you go! It’s lucky that I’ve got lots of pencils and two erasers!
Track 4.3
Asif: What’s your favourite memory of primary school? Would you like to go first, Maz?
Maz: OK. My favourite memory was my first day.
Anna: Why was it so special?
Maz: Because it was when I met my best friend, Amira. On my first day, I remember playing with her
and her sister. She came up to me in the playground because she needed another girl to join her
sister’s game. And we got on really well. And through Amira, I met my other close friends, Tara
and Lucy. We are still good friends. I go to Tara’s house at least once a week and I see Amira
nearly every day.
Asif: Great, thanks Maz. What memories does everyone else have? What about you, Dom?
Dom: Yes, my first day at primary school was not so good. I was very nervous and it was difficult
to make friends.
Maz: That’s hard. People’s memories of their first day at primary school can be very different.
Did it get any better?
Dom: Yes, it did. It took a while, but I made a really good friend called Jamal in my first year and
he introduced me to football. That made things better. I always enjoyed all the sports activities
at primary school. One of my favourite activities was Sports Day. I always won lots of races
and it helped me to start feeling more confident.
Asif: That’s interesting. And Anna, how about you? …

CAMBRIDGE IGCSETM ENGLISH (AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE): TEACHER'S RESOURCE
Track 4.4
Kensuke: My favourite teacher at secondary school is Mr Ord. He is my English teacher. I like him because
he is very kind and patient and can explain things really clearly. He has helped me a lot this year.
He is enthusiastic about the subject and that makes me feel more interested in it.
In Mr Ord’s lessons, we learn in different ways. He likes us to discuss things and ask lots of
questions. Sometimes we work in pairs and groups. This is good because we can listen to each
other’s ideas and help each other.
Track 4.5
Narrator: How do you like to learn, Justin?
Justin: In history, I like to spend a lot of time asking the teacher questions. That helps me to understand
things. I also like working in pairs, because it helps to talk with a partner.
Narrator: How do you like to learn, Adah?
Adah: I watch videos. I like them because you can watch them a few times until you understand things.
Practice exams are also good, because they help me find out how well I am doing.
Narrator: Do you enjoy listening to your teacher, Wang le?
Wang le: Yes, I do. Mr Simpson knows a lot about physics, so it’s great to listen to an expert. He explains
things very clearly. I also like using my textbook because I can check my work. It has all of the
answers at the back!
Narrator: Do you prefer working in groups or pairs, Lisa?
Lisa: I like working in pairs – it’s easier to talk. In a group, sometimes you don’t get the chance to
speak much.
Narrator: Do you find homework helpful, Lisa?
Lisa: Yes, but I don’t enjoy doing it! It’s boring but I can see why we should practise what we have
learned in lessons at home.
